Title: Skewers
Post by: Naga on July 18, 2012, 08:42 AM
Just got these skewers (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271006444027&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:GB:1123) through the post - 6.99GBP +3.49GBP P&P from a well-known auction site.

I'm no expert, but these stainless steel 55cm x 8mm square section skewers certainly look the business and the price is definitely right.

No more spinning meat from now on! :D

The photo isn't great, but the 50p on the left gives an idea of scale.

Well, I've just finished doing a large batch of pre-cooked chicken at the weekend, so I won't be needing any tikka for a while, but I think I'll have a go at Razor's seekh kebab pretty soon. Probably next week some time as my fridge is bursting at the seams with fresh food at the mo!

Hi Naga,

Perfect skewers my friend, almost identical to mine.  These are great for grilling tikka with as they do reduce the cook time somewhat, and the hole that is left behind means that the curry will run through the meat, making every mouthful wonderfully juicy :D

There is only one slight negative with them, in time the handles tend to come off but it's no big deal, I just squeeze a little wood to metal glue down the handle, and they're as good as new.

Ray :)

p.s, good luck with my seekh kebab recipe, which one will you be trying?

Hi Ray,

Good tip for the handles - thanks!

I'll be going for your revised recipe - after all, if it has superceded your previous revisions, I'd be daft not to try the recipe you consider to be the best. :D

Just ordered some of these. Hoping they are the real stainless and not iron as some peeps have found out when ordering similar items.

How are they doing?

...Hoping they are the real stainless...

If the skewers you ordered are the same as those I wrote about in the first post on this thread then you'll not be disappointed. :)

Some very similar on Fleebay but only 4mm.  Always thought it is better to be better in the girth than the length..    ;D  Joking aside  - a bigger hole should = more evened cooking from within.   :o :o :o :o :o :o

Mine have arrived and I am so impressed with them that I have ordered four more! I have even waxed up the handles and they look great . He has a couple more sets on there still.

to those w/o a tandoor: Where do you put your skewers on to cook the meat?

For example, using the skewers that naga bought, if you were to place it in the oven, wouldn't the wooden handles burn too?

Mine go on large roasting tray under grill. They are suspended and are long enough that the handles are not under the heat.

I'm not sure I followed you RubyDoo -- do you mean you put them just under the grill, but with the handles sticking out of the oven, i.e leaving the oven's door open? :)

Thanks

er  yes. That is exactly what I do.  I think the confusion comes in where peeps have stupid ovens where the grill doesn't work unless the door is closed.  I just cannot understand that. A grill is an element that glows red etc and applies direct heat to the food underneath. Why on earth does the door need to be closed? Yes, mine will get hotter all round with the door closed but then it has more of an oven effect and direct heat from above.

Sorry just read it again. Using iPad which can be iffy on some websites. It does give the dimensions and these are small fry compared to those in the thread and which I have got. Mine are 55cm length and 8mm diameter. Up to you but I did wonder what these were at that price for 6  ;)

If they cant source the items for you, then they'll surely point you in the right direction.  :)

I dont notice the hole with these flats Malc. I can thread each piece of meat 3 times quite easily, although it can be scary  ;D (always in fear of self inflicted stigmata)

Actually, why am i threading them!! I just need to slide them on whole.  ::)
Speaking of holes, When i used to buy kebab rolls from Deans in Croydon, they would ask if you want it hot?
Of course!  ;D
They would then push 3 fresh whole green chillies into the hole of each seekh kebab :P

Trouble finding skewers that are 8cm with a reasonable price. May have a chance of 4cm: the question is what material difference would there be when only using them for kebabs [or others that i have not thought of]?

I say this because of an interesting point was raised using chillies also, but would not a 4cm just as well do that task?

Unless anyone can provide me with a clarified and definitive answer as to why it should be 8cm, then I'm lost [once again  :-\]

Maybe its because 4mm is quite small and the meat might still spin even though being square?  :-\
It was the price and the shape of the steel flats that sold it for me. I knew the meat would stay in place with those, and for a quid each i couldnt go wrong.  ;)

Hi mate. Out of interest, how do you get the skewer back onto the handle?  I have 5 of these where is handle is off and the silly little screw is ineffective.  I've tried ramming it on but I've bent the tip so now useless!!!

Any info would be gratefully received.

Razor isn't around any more, Stu (more's the pity). I'm afraid the sort of skewers we have don't have screws - they're just push on wooden handles. Mine's *did* come off in the wash at first but they're solid nowadays. I'm not sure what you mean by bending the tip. Ours are 4mm square-section stainless steel - you couldn't bend them with a vice without heating them first.

Perhaps a photo of the problem might help? :)

Ray was last seen in October of last year.  I spoke to him earlier in the year and he had just lost his Dad at the time, so was feeling pretty low.  He did say that he was looking forward to getting stuck in to some cookery again (both Indian and Chinese) but that was the last I heard from him; I'll send him another PM and see if I can encourage him back.

Come on Naga. Unless you are talking about frail women, old men or little girls..can't be bent without a vice or heating? Haahah.

Dude I could bend one with my butt cheeks if pressed. But seriously though, between two hands, a girl could do that (OK a hefty girl). I speak from experience by the way (yes, use of the knee may be required, depending on how they've been tempered).

You must be superweak or something.

I think the CERN LHC is looking for that particle in its new souped-up phase. Perhaps you had it all along. Could've saved billions.  ;D

Dude I could bend one with my butt cheeks if pressed.

Depending on the length, I'd like to see that.  ;D

And not in a Jimmy Saville sort of way but more of an A. Abbot Physics sort of way.

I'm not sure about A.Abbot (is that an A-level physics text? I have a very vague memory of such). No this is more of a B.Butt sort of effort.

But(t) you're right, the length matters. Unless you sit on it of course!   ;) :o ;D

No need to be conCERNed Gav. We all know that Froggy torus is the death knell for us all. We're doomed...dooooomed!  ;D

Ordinary Level physics.
And the CERN  was talk of a job there (don't get excited)  whilst talking to 2 CERN scientists on the millenium bridge in Newcastle. So back at the depot the Hadron collider soon became a picture of me with a large 'sieve/drainer' on my head as a Hadron collender with the statement....'Am I hired?'

I do miss the humour at work  :(

And we've went from cheap Chinese skewers to particle physics. Unbelievable.... :o

And with a picture from inside Jerry's pan.

If by pan you mean head...I can definitely believe it!   :o

These are a bit more reasonable:

I wonder what the cost is once they add P&P from Aus to the UK!  ;D

I like the idea of the "V" cross section to stop the food rotating on them though.

Postage is included in the price you see, and the seller is Hong Kong based, not Australia.
