In Brum i used to buy these Frozen Curries in the single portion metal takeaway containers, yuo could get madras, jalfrezi, vindaloo the usual suspects and they were brilliant, just like the takeaways.
I think they were a couple of quid each and were just the sauce and meat, no rice.
Used to get them from local shops in the freezers, spar and the likes.
They were labelled Mr Daves But ive not seen them for years.
Some ready meals are a good cheap alternative, my mate swears by tesco's or asda's chicken phall, and sometimes you just cant be arsed to do anything other than nuking a plastic bag so why not.
Although tonight i had a spicy curry not poodle, and it was shite!.
You pay your money and you take your chance.

We used to buy some frozen curries in the early 80's in a metal tray just as you described P&J though they were by Bismillah or Memsahib's they were bloody good back then. Don't know if I'd still think the same now though :\ We used to call their keemas kit-e-kat curries because you could never really tell what the meat was lol

the majority of BIRs (which are mostly Pakistani, not Bangladeshi as the majority of what the rest of you eat are - the Bangladeshi BIRs in Leeds are particulary average, the Pakistani / Punjabi style goes down better here).

That certainly seems to be the case in Huddersfield too. Punjabi style seems to be on the up while the Bangladeshi BIR's appear to be on the wane, dunno why but then again I don't really care as long as the curries are good lol

You're twisting his choice of a generic, technical term to an absurd extent. The LIDL curries I recommended recently most certainly do include chicken. Are you trying to suggest it's some synthetic material? I'm fairly sure these dishes are more healthy than most curries from a BIR and, if members' attempts at BIR curries are a '99%' match, then these supermarket curries will be healthier than BIR 'copies' made at home, too.  There are virtually no additives and no colour.

I'm not suggesting they contain synthetic anything, merely mass produced, globally sourced, bulked out, pumped full of chemicals/antibiotics, cage reared, force fed (on fish meal usually), in bred mutant 'chicken' from birds that bear no resemblance what so ever to anything you would recognise as a normal chicken.

Do yourself a favour and google 'mass produced chicken' and get some food for thought.

I accept the chickens are unlikely to be the 'highest quality' free range types but I can never taste the difference in a Sunday roast, let alone served up in a curry sauce. I agree the quality of the chunks of chicken in the supermarket curries I recommended is a tad dry but I've tasted worse in some BIRs. Having followed campaigning over the recent years for the well being of chickens and general livestock that supply our supermarkets, I have to say there is a noticeable difference in the taste of a well looked after chicken. Smell and appearance are also much better and the finished cooked meat has much more taste. Not forgetting though, the most important part of buying such a bird is for it's quality of life prior to its slaughter. That is something that I feel is very important.

I don't think it is fair either, to brand all BIR's as being unethical and buying only the cheapest chicken available. I know many take-away and restaurant outlets that pride themselves in the quality of meat produce they serve.

I do agree however, that supermarkets in general are much more aware of consumer ethics and demand. It is good to see them trying to produce a better standard of food. I guess I am a little harsh in my opinion of these mass produced pre-made foods stuffs. But this is because I genuinely find the meals, poor in taste and quite far from the meal they are meant to taste like. Perhaps it's more to do with the power the supermarkets wield over our choice as a consumer. More over because I for one, would like to shop in the high street from locally sourced produce but can't, because all the good quality high street shopping has been forced to close unable to compete with a

I really wonder if you could taste the difference in a blind taste test. This is what I'm eating this evening - a Lidl chicken which cost GBP2.71. I eat about one a week and don't know anywhere which offers better value, It tastes like chicken, it smells like chicken and it is chicken. I could buy a free range chicken from Waitrose or M&S costing almost GBP10, no doubt, for the same weight, and I'm not convinced I'd notice any difference in flavour on the plate.  As far as welfare is concerned, I regret I don't have the spare cash to spend the extra. I'm sorry if  the reality "really winds you up".

I am sure that the farm fresh / organic / free range industry has as many charlatans as any other industry. However, if that chicken cost ?2.71 then something is being exploited. If it isn't the chicken then it is the farmer. My guess is that it is both. I would rather pay twice as much and eat it half as often. And even if it tastes exactly the same.
