We had a Sainsbury's taste the difference CTM HOT tonight and I've got to say it was DREADFUL....like a tin of thick heinz tomato soup with a bit of chilli powder and some coriander thrown in...Darling husband was after another curry and I just couldn't be bothered making one so after all the fuss about pre-mades I talked him into driving 5 mile to the nearest Sainsburys...total waste of money and petrol...absolutely awful in both looks and taste :( we've just had a week of excellent curries and after tonight's eye-opener, I'll not be tempted into buying another of those in a helluva long time.

But who recommended that particular brand and dish? Not me! I've yet to have a good curry from Sainsburys.

I really wonder if you could taste the difference in a blind taste test. This is what I'm eating this evening - a Lidl chicken which cost GBP2.71. I eat about one a week and don't know anywhere which offers better value, It tastes like chicken, it smells like chicken and it is chicken. I could buy a free range chicken from Waitrose or M&S costing almost GBP10, no doubt, for the same weight, and I'm not convinced I'd notice any difference in flavour on the plate. As far as welfare is concerned, I regret I don't have the spare cash to spend the extra. I'm sorry if  the reality "really winds you up".

I appreciate that not everyone can afford to buy free range chickens, but if you don't have to go to Waitrose or M&S to get one. Not least as these stores will charge you more for your chicken than others, but not necessarily give you a better reared chicken. Better still, try and find a locally reared free range supplier.

As far as taste testing, all I can say is try it. You will be very surprised at the difference, as was I when I first did. The wife too noticed how much better the taste was and we haven't looked back since. Of course, I am talking about the chicken being eaten on it's own, not covered in spicy curry sauce.

If your even remotely concerned about chicken welfare, check out this site: http://www.chickenout.tv/

I never said anyone recommended it, just posted my views on the one S/M curry that I'd tried, George, no need to get defensive lol I'm only saying that that particular curry was dreadful, not that they all are. :)

When it comes to meat/poultry I have to buy it from farm shops as the meat sold in supermarkets is very poor in comparison, you've only to look at the colour for a start. If I do have to buy supermarket chicken I always plum for the organic/corn fed chicken as the cheaper chicken has far less flavour. You get what you pay for I'm afraid. I'd rather pay ?50 for a turkey than buy a cheap or frozen one anyday.

I just tried a Tesco Take-Away range vegetable curry. No heat to speak of, bland and with far too crunchy vegetables. I won't be trying that one again.
