Ok. Used one packet of this yesterday to make JBs pathia (chick pea and butternut squash version). Watered it down and used a hand jobby thing to smooth it out. Enough base for 2 curries I would say.

Result? It tasted really good - wife said it was one of the best veggy curries I'd made. However, it's the first time I've tried JBs pathia, so can't compare it with a homebase base version yet. Perhaps I need to make a known curry with the packet base, and then compare.

Overall though, very successful I think. Sorry, forgot to take any pics!

Does the fact that this base is lumpy indicate that they don't blend it, but rather just cook the hell out of it until it's almost liquefied? If so, and if it tastes best than your own base, maybe you can improve your own base by cooking longer?

Hi sverige. I didn't say it was better than my own base - I haven't had chance to properly compare yet. However, it did produce good results, better than I expected.

It does need blending though.

Ok fair enough, but again if it needs blending I wonder if they don't blend it at all, but rather just cook it until it's most of the way there. If so, this would indicate a far longer cook than I've ever attempted when making base.

I have use it twice now it seems to be cooked longer until the onions have dropped I don't think it's blended! Tastes ok more like pataks IMO
but nothing like your average home made BIR gravy

You need to dilute it and blend as 1 pack is insufficient at 175 mls, I follow Phils recommendation of 1:1 with water

For someone like me who doesn't make that many saucy curries it's good enough, after all the base is basically just the carrier for your spicing, and can vary from very few ingredients to quite complicated
