Glasgow via Germany
« on: April 09, 2013, 04:18 PM »
Bradford was a Huge let down for me as was Glasgow last weekend for a choice of good spice shops and fresh ingredients.
Its been a few years since i ate up there(restaurants before) so i was really looking forward to re-sampling this "Glasgow taste" again.
I was so disappointed to the point of being angry!  >:(
What IS this? i said  :o
I tried 4 different curries from two takeaways in different areas. I thought they were bad here in Wales! but no,, these were worse and no better than German curries.  ::)

South Indian garlic
Aloo Gobi
A dish simply called Spinach (tikka marinated with spices cooked in clay oven with spinach, garlic & herbs)
A Bhuna that tasted like beans on toast(maybe butter?)

Totally bland with no flavour of spices at all! The one flavour that dominated was fresh ginger. Only the next day when they were cold could i taste anything that resembled a curry.
The only things that had ANY flavour were the fried items, Samosas, Hot & Spicy Rice, veg paratha, veg pakoras.

So, i'm bored with hearing about the "glasgow taste"
BIR's and TA's are the same up and down the UK. You get good chefs and you get bad chefs. No one region is better than the other.

I agree 100%.

I think it's a fallacy that you get good and bad BIR areas, the quality of the dishes are totally dependent on the quality of the restaurant and the Chef's and Cooks who cook it.

Have you had curries in Germany? Yes, they are really bad most of the time ... I'm just wondering about your backgrounds for saying that.

Is this a 1st?  3 of us agreeing in a row.  ;)

............ And then you get the inconstancy from one particular venue. Why is it , once in every now and again, we get a tub of rubbish from what is normally a great TA?  Laziness? Busy? Crap chef?  Don't often order in these days but youngest handed in dissertation today and caught me unawares with, Dad, do us a curry. I am NOT cooking again tonight so in hands of local T a once more.

Not forgetting of course the experience of and exposure to "quality" BIR of the assessor themselves.  Basically, it is all very much in the eye of the beholder, is it not ::)

I haven't had any in Germany, but I've had them in Spain and they were dreadful - some of the worst I've ever had, anywhere.

Really saddened to hear that, Frank.

There was no shortage of establishments offering quite simply stunning curries when I lived there back in 1981-82, and since I moved back down south I've often idly thought about jumping on a plane just to go back and revisit some of my favourite restaurants.

From what you say it sounds like I'd be disappointed though...

But surely there MUST be some top notch curry houses left up there?

I had a Chicken Madras in Bulgaria last summer and it was terrible.
