Chewy's Spicy Onion Salad (Deluxe)

I love Indian Pickles.

BIR Restaurants have been using Pataks Pickles for many years and are hard to beat,
many members may know there taste if they order the pickle tray and poppadoms as an appetizer at their favourite local.

Well here's the twist, just like spooning a mixture of everything onto a poppadom and crunching away on the mix of flavours.
After taking the lead from a Chef friend of mine, I thought, why not combine everything into a onion salad and WoW, what a flavour explosion.



What you need, Lime Pickle, Mixed Pickle, Green Chilli Pickle, Mango Chutney,
Colmans Garden Mint Sauce. White Onion, Red Onion, Green Capsicum, Cucumber, Tomato.



Slice all the Onion lengthways.



De-seed the Tomato and Cucumber and slice julienne.



Add 1Tbs of each - Lime Pickle, Mixed Pickle, Green Chilli Pickle, Mango Chutney,
Colmans Garden Mint Sauce. (I also added a few pickled Jalapenos)





Get your hand in and mix it through, squish





Serve up with Poppadom or Puffed Rice (Muri) and enjoy.
It lasts a few days in the fridge and it just seems to get better with age.

As Michael says, most of us end up with a bit of everything mixed up on a plate anyway, and while I've often mixed mango chutney into my onion salad at home, I've never tried bunging in the rest of the pickles.

That's about to change!

The green chilli pickle is that made by Pataks? Managed to get the other ones - I got a supermarket jar of green chillies in brine, would that be okay or just leave it out? Mince them?

You could chop up some brined green chillies, but you won't get the same flavour as you get from chilli pickle, which contains mustard, fenugreek, turmeric, and asafoetida. But better to have some chilli in there than none at all, I'd say.   

As Chewy says, most BIRs use Pataks pickles, and their chilli pickle is a decent one, but there are plenty of other good brands available, and they're all variations on the same theme. I'm currently using one from an Indian brand (Ashoka, which is made in Gujarati). It has more chillies in than many (60%), and is tasty but a little on the salty side.

What did you try that was similar Severige? A little more explanation would be helpful, maybe some photos of your talents.
