Hi Guys,

I would love to get an outdoor gas burner to be able to cook curries in the wild (well near my campervan lol) but at the moment do not really want to break the bank.

Can anyone comment on this ebay item? work out the Kw output?

these are all over out here in Thailand - no problems with this frame - just need a gas bottle some pipe a regulator and two jubilee clips and off you go cooking anywhere

Fairly sure this forum has been here before, possibly even the same picture/supplier.  There was a long discussion about which pipe, high or low pressure, and so on.  Here's a link that will get you going ...

Here's an idea, not that I've tried it myself, yet. But I expect it to work.

Take some piping and bend it to the desired shape, like a circle, or perhaps make do with straight runs for ease of construction. Drill loads of holes in it. Block one end and feed gas in the other end, via a pressure regulator and orifice. Write your will, ignite and assess.

Where am I coming from? Well, I saw burner rings which looked like they were probably intended for tandoor ovens, in at least one supermarket down Brick Lane. They didn't have fancy jets or nozzles, but relied just on holes drilled in the steel pipe, plus some form of inlet orifice, I guess. What could be simpler?

Can't comment on the burner you've posted, but I have a very nice little butane stove that I take camping with me, and I have used it to cook curries outdoors (in the summer when I don't want to heat up the kitchen) and it does a fine job.  You can see one like it here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yellowstone-Portable-Gas-Stove-Black/dp/B001W78P0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327674848&sr=8-1

It takes the butane canisters that you see further down the page, which last a surprisingly long time.  If you can find the canisters in an Asian market, they're much cheaper than Amazon, maybe $2.00 US each; don't know what they would be in the UK, but probably comparable.

Cooked many a curry outside when camping for friends and strangers, just walking past and asking where we got it from, me being a generous sort of person giving away a few free curries.

it's a decent question and one we should be able to answer.

i have very similar. mine does not produce what i would call a "bunsen burner" flame. it more lazy and yellow. the picture in CA's crucial post (https://curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=1851.0) shows a "bunsen burner" flame.

this leaves only the question is the heat enough. these stoves have a jet which can either be replaced or modified (drilled out).

i would go for it.

If I remember  my schoolday physics & chemistry lessons correctly, a Bunsen burner produces that blue, intense, heat, because of the annular ring above the jet, which can be rotated to admit more or less air (the air is pulled in by venturi effect).  Looking at CA's image, I would suggest that his burner has something similar, although not adjustable.  And when I look at my chef's blowtorch, which can also produce an intense blue flame, it too has an adjuster, just like a Bunsen burner; and if the air supply is shut off, by rotating the annular ring sufficiently far (it is on a screw thread), the flame cease to be intense blue and becomes sulky yellow instead.

Thanks Guys just ordered it.

For that price it will be a good place to start and hopefully will allow me to also cook paella outdoors when we go on road trips in the camper van.

So next question is what fixings will I probably need to get this working with my current Gas bottle here:





I am guessing I will need:

• Another regulator similar to the one shown above
• Gas Standard piping
• Jubilee clips
• Way to control flow of gas

Any tips, links, advice etc much appreciated. Also does anyone know if I can work out the equivalent kw rating of this given the information in the ebay description?

From what i read prior to buying my burner and fittings was that propane burns hotter than butane, even though either or will do fine.
I already had a few butane bottles and fittings kicking around, but decided to swap one for an orange propane down the scrappy.
Same manufacturer, so that was handy. saved me 25 quid for a new empty.
