Seen one or two mention playing guitar.
So what guitars do you have, and what are you playing?
I have an old yamaha FG200 acoustic from the 70s, a Stanford D5 acoustic (very nice sounding) and Fender Jap Strat.
Trying a bit of solo playing at the moment. I love David Gilmour, so am trying to copy some of his solos - comfortably numb and brick in the wall. Also having a go at Hotel Californa end solo. Taking lots of practice, but I'm getting there!
Anyone else?
-
I have a Fender Katana in black with Floating Trem (quite rare), a USA Fender Standard Telecaster Tobacco Sunburst with a coil tapped hot rail at the bridge, and a Jackson Stealth EX. These are played through my rack which is a Marshall JMP-1, Alesis Quadraverb and a Korg DT-1 Tuner linked to a Yamaha midi foot switch. Big noise is provided by my JCM 900 Dual Reverb 100w head and a 1970a 4x12 Angled Cab. 70's, 80',s 90's, Rock is what comes out. ;)

Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Custom 24 ten top with bird inlays
Mesa Boogie Simulclass Mark III
Taylor 412 acoustic

Just sold my Gibson Les Paul Standard, but still have my Marshall amps and other sound gear. I'll probably pickup (geddit?) a Fender Tele once I've finished restoring my K100RT bike (which I haven't even started yet!). I've always had Gibsons - Flying-V, SG Standard and Les Paul - but the only Fender I've owned was a blonde Jazz bass, so a Tele will be a bit of a change for me.
I'm getting by with my Epiphone PR5E-SV electro-acoustic and my Epiphone Dove acoustic for now.
-
A flying V for naga! Did you have platforms to go with that? :)
-
...Did you have platforms to go with that? :)
I will admit only to spending my adolescence in an era when long hair and platforms were de rigueur...
Oh! And the "V" was due to the influence of Andy Powell and Wishbone Ash, may their music last forever!

I've got a Hofner Shorty 6 string electric as a stop-gap until I can get a Yamaha Pacifica for about

Not trying to take credit off him, but because I've seen a friend do a similar techno-like song on guitar workshop in lisbon several years ago, it didn't really make me wow.

Yes he has Les, but it doesn't stop the keyboard warriors. Here's a comment on his youtube page
"its only the delay that makes it sound hard? " - that from the youtube nobody "Moglyfish ". Some people should use white font on a white background.
I remember this guy being called a fake :)

Hi meggeth, agreed Gilmour's guitar work is brilliant, it's not overly complex with a bit of practice, recreating his tone though,as the solos are so well known is difficult. Mother is another great solo & song

Anyone got a Marshall Shredmaster?

I admire anyone that can play well, but technical ability and playing well are two different things. I give you one thing though, he does look like a muppet! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLnOx4E-G1g

Ah this brings back fond memories, I had a Yamaha Pacifica electric in sea-foam green and a no-name acoustic from Argos (I forget the brand of that one), had to stop playing 15 years ago due to the onset of RA in my fingers :'(. Although I was never in a band it was a fantastic hobby, I was gutted when I had to give it up.

:Shameless plug:
Seeing as we have a few musicians, I thought I'd let you know that I'm selling a few things for guitar players. If you are interested let me know.
all for approx 298

For those of us who still think of a guitar as the instrument played by Andres Segovia, John Williams, Narcisso Yepes & Manitas de Plata, what exactly is/are "line 6 pod x3 live + isp decimator + maxon od808" ?!
** Phil.
-
a Line6 pod x3 live is a floor board with multiple configurable channels that is capable of emulating some fantastic amplifiers and effects and can have 2 amplifiers simulators run at the same time. IOW, the amount of sounds this can make is limitless. An ISP decimator is hands down the best noise supressing pedal out there. Maxon od808 is an overdrive pedal. It basically boosts the guitar signal and tighten up your amp's sound. I can't relate to the musicians below other than Segovia, who is a classical player and probably wouldn't benefit of this equipment :)

I saw this group (Jon butler trio) about a year ago, an Australian band. Check this song out, the guitarist playing a song on solo guitar, tracks called ocean. It's rockin around 4 mins in to it. Awesome!! Think its played on an 11 string acoustic not 12.

WOW!!!!
We hear a lot of John Butler commercial stuff on radio over here. I didn't realise he can actually play. That was fantastic. I must make an effort to go watch them live next time they play.
-
Think its played on an 11 string acoustic not 12.
I'm watching that thinking hang on, there's a string missing, then proceed to count the pegs, then noticed the nut, stone the crows an 11 string guitar!
Only then did I see you comment. ::)

I now prefer Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash, to Andy Powell's version.
Can anybody here play the guitar to pub-based cover band standard? I quite frequently enjoy such music and it never ceases to amaze me how much talent there is out there, or how they manage to reproduce the sounds of so many different artists, quite so well.

Yes I can George, and can probably play slightly beyond that to some degree in that I can play some technically difficult rock music by the likes of Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. A few years ago I used to teach guitar several nights a week through our local arts centre. You get so much back from teaching and you playing improves to boot. Having said that you can't beat a bit of David Gilmour - not technically difficult but boy does he have an ear for choosing the right notes.

Yamaha SG2000 (showing my age)
But such a great guitar - has been re-issued in the last few years.

Strong on technique, this chap but his music leaves me a bit cold. He also can play left and right handed guitar simultaneously - truly bizarre, truly gimmicky, but also truly wonderful in a tacky sort of way if that makes sense.

My baby,
A BB King epiphone Lucille (Not the one in pic but identicle).
I run it though the pc but rarely plug it in. I used to get most of my lessons from youtube IE Justin Sandercoe and Marty Schwartz but now getting my head around a bit of jazz with with a great fella called Freddy M...

Wow, I'm impressed. Cooking a good curry should be so easy by comparison.
Do they get different sounds (for different songs) via settings on effects boxes?

Nice, Satriani, Vai, some of the greats, but there are so many other greats i've followed.
I dedicated myself to Angus Young, but used to thrash out the usual pub favourites.

George the actual guitarists themselves have different sounds because they use different guitars, amps, strings etc. and of course the biggest contributor to their unique sound is how they play - every guitarist has an individual vibrato for instance. In a pub band though some guitarists will use little boxes that "digitally model" an amp and effects set-up that provides an emulation of one sound that is a likeness but falls short of being an actual clone and may in fact be missing that elusive 5%.
Does that sound familiar lol?

Angus is of course a true star, and Bon Scott was born in the town of Kirriemuir which is about 14 miles from my home. Along with Angus I would of course include the likes of Blackmore, Page etc. as among my favs.

I regard the acoustic guitar played in a classic style by John Williams and others as a completely different instrument to the electric guitar. I quite liked one or two tracks from the band 'Sky' which he worked with.
I rate just two or three tracks from many bands and not much else. This includes the Rolling Stones and U2 for my taste or distate. They each have a few good tracks and that's all. I can't understand how these bands are so huge.

that's a bit mental - I used to be able, with practice to do 4 notes per beat at 300 to 350 bpm, but it gets to a point where it's just a blur.
