Hello everyone...
« on: August 13, 2012, 09:38 PM »
... I've been exiled in Munich for over a year and I'm really missing my favourite UK curry houses. Via YouTube, I found this site and it looks like my prayers have been answered. Can't wait for this weekend when I'm going to do my first base!

Ah yes, "German Indian Food" : not one of my favourite cuisines, I must confess !  Slightly better than German Chinese Food, but not much.  Still, by this time next week you will have enjoyed your first genuine BIR meal in over 12 months, and you will never look back (if you can source all of the ingredients, that is : coriander seems completely unknown in Nienburg/Weser !).

... But fortunately there are quite a lot of Asian Supermarkets in the city so I should be ok with the sourcing. I even get coriander at our local fruit & veg shop - but it's not on display - you have to ask for the "special stuff" - and he only gets a very limited quantity (one bunch I think). So, for me, coriander is easier to get than Tetley tea bags, which I get sent over by friends.

Welcome to CR0 Harry, have you taken to any of the German take away alternatives? I'm always interested to learn more about world cuisine.

There are plenty of recipes on here, i'm sure you'll find curry nirvana amongst them. :)

I haven't...

... had an Indian Takeaway in Munich - in fact I haven't even seen one! I've been to an Indian Restaurant (these are much rarer than Italians and Chinese). It was OK - although I'm sure the Germans have an aversion to chillies (which they call pepperoni) - even the chilli powder in the supermarkets is very mild (although the asian supermarkets do the real thing).

Welcome to the forum Harry.
What part of the UK are you from originally and What curries are you missing the most.?

Just an idea, but when your in an Asian Supermarket stocking up with spices,
You could ask where the best place is to get a curry locally, they might point you in the right direction.
and you can compare it with your new cooking. ;)

cheers Chewy

I'm from Chorley originally - nearby Darwen has some fantastic curry houses (the Akash and the Anaz were my favourites). For the last 20 years I lived on Merseyside - first in Woolton, where the Jewel of India (ok) was the local. Then we moved to Formby and the local curry house there is known to locals as the School House (actually called Hilal Balti House). I loved it there - we used to call it "the 38" because if two of you went for a meal it always came to 38 quid - whatever you had. Chicken Tikka Jalfezi was my usual and is the most missed.

Good idea about the Asian Supermarket, Chewy. Thanks.
