Just downloaded this one from Filehippo, Seems to work pretty good and its free : http://www.filehippo.com/download_atubecatcher/
It's a .exe, so treat with caution, but I have just scanned it with all tools at my disposal and it seems clean.  First-time downloaders : make sure you click on the right download button; the large one is to a completely different and unrelated product that you almost certainly don't want ...

According to their web site, it costs   $29.95 USD for each year (unless I have mis-read it); also again beware the large green (ubiquitous) "Download now" button (which is completely unrelated) and follow the in-text link : "Download the program : Click here to download latest version of the KeepVid for Windows (1.142). *updated 13/08/2011*"

Assuming you're using a PC, first visit the youtube page of the video you wish to save, then you can simply edit the URL in your browser's address bar to insert the word "save" before YouTube. So www.youtube.com/xyz123 becomes www.saveyoutube.com/xyz123.

It's been a whole since I used this method and I'm nowhere near a PC to check it now, but trust it still works? It's by far the simplest method I know.
Sadly now past its sell-by date :
"SaveYouTube is shutting down! Please visit SaveMedia.com instead. Make sure to update your bookmarks!"

I have never used saveyoutube, so do not know whether the savemedia service will be comparable; I use the "Flashgot" plug-in for the Gecko family (Seamonkey, Firefox, ...).

Oh, too bad. Sorry for the out of date info. I always wondered how they got away with using "YouTube" as part of the name of their service. Guess YouTube's lawyers put paid to that.
