cr0 versus Facebook and Twitter
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:36 AM »
I've used a few forums like cr0 for several years, related to specific areas of special interest.

I've never taken an interest in Facebook, Twitter or any similar site. I'm not even aware of the appeal or why/how they appear to be so popular.

Does anyone here also use Facebook or Twitter in quite a big way, and can they please explain. What's it all about? What's the appeal? Could a special interest in a subject like BIR cooking be processed as well, or better on Facebook or Twitter, rather than on a traditional forum like this one? I can't see how but am I wrong?

If not - if you leave out all special interests, what is there left to talk about?

Hi George,

Well, where does one start?  I don't use Twitter as such because I'm not all that interested in what some over payed, egostistical footballer has to say to be honest but I do use Facebook frequently.

I have many friends that have moved out of the area, abroad even and for me, it's a great way to keep in touch, chat and basically catch up with them.  I've also seen the downside of Facebook, i:e, couples splitting up because one of them has re-kindled an old relationship with a former partner.

Being a football fanatic, I have the chance to dish out some friendly banter against my Blue mates and just basically have the craic.

If the social networking site are used correctly, they can be very enjoyable and, sometimes, quite informative, I do feel that they should be monitored better though..!

Just my thoughts George.

Ray :)

I check out Facebook for the same reasons as Razor.

We had a trip back to UK in 2010 and I manged to find some old schoolmates (through Facebook) that I hadn't seen since I left school in 1979. We had a bit of a re-union while I was back and it was really good to see them. Also found other mates from the area I grew up in, so all in all for me, Facebook has been great.

It's also good to see photo's of friends, cousins, nephews, nieces etc.  AND of course to take the p**s out of Man City fans these last few weeks. ;D

Hi George,

I am just like Razor I suppose. I cannot see the point of Twitter in any sense at all, but I am a big user of Facebook pretty much for the same reasons as Razor, to keep in touch with my friends and family. Also to keep in touch on a daily basis with my wonderful girlfriend who lives in Tampa USA.

I used to use My Space before Facebook, which used to be great but Facebook has far superceded My Space which is a shame really....

Oh, incidently, a lot of companies ask to be followed on facebook, whether that is a good idea for a forum or not I am not too sure.. When I used to use My Space, there used to be forums for all different kinds of stuff and the one I used to go to most was "Cooking/recipes", but I seem to remember there also being lots of arguments about different recipes always from people from different areas of the world, so another (regional thing)....

So whether CR0 would be good for Facebook or not, I can't really answer that question....

Maybe as a way to attract new members, but I don't think I would want it as to and fro kind of page... not sure how it would be controlled really....

There is a funny trending topic on Twitter at the moment - #curryhousefootballers - the idea being to link curries with footballers names:

Demba Bhaji, Alan Ball-ti, Garlic Nani, Vindaloo Jones, Chicken Biry-Nani, Ledley King Prawn Masala, Chicken JalFraizer Campbell

Very funny if you like football and curry :)

Many thanks to you and the others who've responded so far. I hope I now understand a bit more than I did. So is Facebook primarily based on current and past real-life friendships, with the communications being similar to what you might actually speak about if you met up in person? Do you control how much of what you write or display (images) is between two or three of you, and how much can be read or seen by a wider audience? Do you also potentially make new friends? It still seems lacking the focus which a forum like this does.

I found a web page which discusses the same thing, saying that many people have given up email exchanges with friends, in favour of communications via Facebook:

Hi George,

The thing with Facebook is, if one of your friends is online, there is a chat facility that is private between you and your friend, so messaging is pretty instant and I can imagine some would rather use this function than a conventional email.  There is also a messaging function which works pretty much the same as an email whereby you have an inbox.  As for photo's, you also have options as to who can see it such as friends only.

You can also delete people off your friends list if things start to go wrong or nasty.

As for Facebook having a focus, well, it doesn't really, it's as you say, a means to catch up and chat with friends in pretty much the same way as you would if you met them in person!

Facebook for me and not twitter at all. I regular post pics of curries that I have for my "tea" and get great feedback.
