Hi Guys
« on: February 18, 2012, 11:56 PM »
Or should that be Gals as well?  From my brief time looking thought the posts it seems to be mostly males who have this obsession with curry. Please prove me wrong  ;)

Anyhow, I have been making and eating curries for around 20 years. Started late really, could not stand curry in my early years, that's what happens when all you were given was those Vesta dishes to try. :D
I used to go to curry houses with my mates and eat the fish & chips with naan bread...  ::)

Moved to New Zealand in 2006 and left a couple of good curry restaurants in my opinion (al bahar and the qismat in Elgin) and arrived to find the state of the curry places here was abysmal. Maybe in the big smokes you will find a good place and I am sure if there are other ex-pat members on this site, they could put me straight. But around my area (Palmerston north) it is pretty average.
This in a way was a good thing, I had to start doing it all myself. Got all the books from the library and found recipes from the internet and gave it a go. They all turned out OK but were missing that certain spark.

I tried the Pat Chapman curry base from the curry Secret book (corrections welcome) but it did not quite do it for me.
Bungled on for a few years with a few recipes that worked, until I bought the Dave Loyden book "undercover curry". I know from the posts I have read on the forum it's a very dividing issue book, but hey it gave me the start and impetus to look for more recipes for the dishes I used to enjoy. Hence I am here posting this, if it wasn't for Dave's book I would not be here. Also the dishes I have prepared from the book have gone down great with the family, so I am looking forward to bigger and better things with the knowledge and experience that has gone in to the recipes posted on this site.

There is a lot to take in and would welcome some pointers to dishes, techniques etc.
I have hit the where do I start and FAQ, so here goes.

Cheers Guys and Gals

Marcus

Hi nzfen, welcome to cr0, I would follow the current thread on the Az,Zaal restaurant in Fleet, threads, & use them as your starting points. The key to this whole melarky has been revealed to me in the past week & as such I'm seeing the recipe's & tips on here in a new light.
Thats Elgin Scotland right?

After the AZ , Zaal stuff I would head here as you may be famliar with the chain

Zaal, Abdulmohed, Chewytikka, Infindforu, Cory Ander to name but a few, all have loads of recipe's on here. These recipe's are then tested to death by forum members

Hello Nzfen.  Welcome to a very happy forum at the moment ;D.  If ever somebody needed to be able to create quality BIR it's the expats.  Wish you every success in this and hope it's  not long before you experience that BIR taste from home in your own kitchen.

Hi Nzfen! Proving you wrong! I absolutely love curry. I was hesitant about revealing my gender on this site for fear of not being taken seriously, I had nothing to worry about   8)
