Spice mix storage/tins/trays
« on: January 21, 2012, 11:07 PM »
Hi all, since accuiring many spices etc in bottles...can anyone suggest a website/local supermarket that sell a large holder for spices, preferably in tins/steel pots type of thing.

Ive done the usual and looked on ebay etc but they only hold around 7 spices max and i could do with one around 20 max.

I dont want a wooden spice rack or wall shelf that they can hold bottles, i dont have to room and they look abit old tbh.

would be good to hear members thoughts on this and what you use etc and pics would be good :-) and just in general how you all store their spices.

Jay

Hi Jay

You ask a very good question.

I think what you're referring to is called a Dabba (the stainless steel pot) and Wala (the container of the stainless steel pots) in Indian.

I'm in exactly the same situation you are in and have far too many spice containers kicking about and was thinking recently about how to consolidate them all. I was looking at these on eBay, although I still haven't bough them yet -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250928270249?var=550057966447&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648#ht_1738wt_1383

I prefer the larger size and wider necks these have - more convenient than the slim spice jars and I'll keep them all in a cupboard in the dark so they don't go stale quite as quickly if left open to the light.

Spiceyokooko,

Ive just come across these little gems

   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380354822806?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1691wt_689

not as desirable as the steel pots but would do the job :-) and would stack nicley in a left over christmas roses tin or celebrations!

Going of the weights 4oz = 113g approx. (roughly two glass jars of the spices you get in the super markets, shwartz (sp) type etc)

Might give them a go

Lakeland used to do one that held about 8 spices in a round lock and lock container.  And were stackable.  Just looked on their website but can't find it now.  Maybe discontinued.  But worth a look if you can find them.  I have 2 which we use in our caravan as they are sealed.

Jay, these look identical to the containers used by my local for their mint sauce delivered with a takeaway.  If they are, whilst being an ideal size they won't last very long.  With time and use they'll become brittle and the lids will star to split.
What Spicey suggested looks excellent.  A cheaper alternative would be would be some small plastic food storage containers like the small one in the picture.  Morrisons do them 3 for

I use 'Lock & Lock' food containers - air-tight and easy to dip your spoon into: http://www.spicesofindia.co.uk/acatalog/Lock-and-Lock-Food-Containers.html

Hi! The picture shows what I use, yes it took a long time to accumulate all the marmite and bovril jars (some jars are nearly twenty years old!), but what I like is that the amber glass keeps out more sunlight (damaging to the spice) and it's quirky and unique. The shelves are in a larder so more protection from the light. I've never yet found a rack big enough for my needs. I personally prefer glass as it leaves no taint, also it's easy to clean.

All the best.

Love it or hate it, it does divide people. I'm about to conjure up a tikka marinade for some chicken, I'm wondering what a teaspoon of marmite would do to it? Any ideas?

All the best.

On second thoughts, although I love Marmite, I think that was a rather silly idea of mine, and I'm keeping to the recipe, lol!  :)
