Radio discussion - BIRs and curries
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:45 PM »
I heard part of a Radio 4 'feature' today which seemed to have been about BIRs and curries. Did any of you hear it? Pat Chapman was interviewed, for a start, and Camelia Panjabi, I think it was.  It might be worth a listen, which can be done via the BBC's website at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/youandyours/

It was on the Radio 4 programme 'You and Yours' at about 12:25 this lunchtime but I don't know when it started. There's a button on the above web page to 'listen to the lastest programme again'. If we find out what time the 'You and Yours' programme starts and finishes overall, perhaps it's possible to fast forward to the equivalent of about 12:20.

Regards
George

    Hi George,

It was more history than cookery. Very basic stuff - 'They use the same sauce for everything' . And one particularly irritating restaurant critic. But nothing of any use to a curry enthusiast.
                Regards,

                               Dave.

I didn't expect or suggest there would be any recipes. I just hoped it might be of interest. If not, I'm sorry to have wasted anyone's time, not that it was me who made the programme!

George

I just listened to the whole 10 minute prog for the first time myself. You can always learn something new. I thought it contained plenty of interest, albeit background interest. I don't rate Pat Chapman's books or most of his recipes but I thought he made some good points in that programme and didn't find him irritating at all. Neither is the programme all about history, although I admit most of it is. And it's interesting, to me at least!

Hi,

It rather reminded me of the "Joy of Curry" program on Sky last week. Very much focussed on the history of the curry house over the last 40 years. From the basic cheap and cheerful curries all made with one base sauce up to the more elaborate and contemporary restaurants we now see popping up in the large cities. There was mention of curries costing 2/6d which runs out around 23p. Those were the days!
