Cheap Tandoor Oven ?
« on: July 26, 2011, 09:23 AM »
Found this while trolling ebay for used tandoors.

I haven't seen these before, anybody with any knowledge of this product?

No, but the feedback is good.  However, before buying, I would be inclined to ask previous buyers whether they have successfully cooked tandoori chicken (or tikka) in the oven, rather than just the breads at which it seems to be aimed (if it is your intention to cook meat as well as bread in the oven, that is).

It looks like nothing more than a standard electric oven. Lidl sell them from time to time for about ?30. I've used one to cook bread successfully so there's no reason it wouldn't cook naans and tikkas. It gets hot inside but that doesn't make it a tandoor. The tray and size of the oven are not large enough to cook a very large pizza.

Nice gadget but not enough room in the kitchen ;D.  Think i'll either go for the tandoor or the nipoori myself :)

Hi

Thanks for posting the link. At first appearance it does looks reasonable.

However, there is no specification to say what the maximum temperature that this device can reach is. Can't find anything on a web search either.

Considering the thing costs

I did try the Google / Youtube routes for info (not the feedback one yet, good thinking!) but to no avail.

I already have a Nipoori, bought it when they first came out & never looked back, but bread is the let down with them.

A comment from George "It gets hot inside but that doesn't make it a tandoor" made me re think what does make the tandoor flavour?

Tandoors are made with clay or steel internals, powered by charcoal or gas, so basically have just one thing in common - high cooking temperature.

If this particular oven can reach 400 deg + it surely must achieve the same results as a real tandoor.

Will post if I can find any valid 'test' results from one of these things.

Hi
If you put electric tandoori in YouTube search, you will find a vid for making pizza
