Drove over Hunton Hill (1) yesterday at about 14:30, and passed a number of vehicles that had either failed to make it or had abandoned the attempt.  I had my winter snow tyres fitted about three weeks ago, and I really believe that these made a difference, although of course nowhere near the difference that chains would have made.  But it is safe to leave snow tyres on even when there is no snow on the ground, whereas chains have to come off immediately in those circumstances.
