Phil, I appreciate your comments however, nowhere should it be allowed that an asylum seeker should be free to commit such crimes and be allowed to stay.
No, of course no asylum seeker should be free to commit such crimes, any more than any of us should be; it is an illegal act, and should be punished with the full severity of the law. But I do not believe that that punishment should be based on the perpetrator's nationality, or his status w.r.t. an application for asylum, or on anything else that is not directly related to the case.
If I recall the news mentioned that he would not be deported as it would put his life in jeopardy. Perhaps we should have deported the little girl instead as allowing him asylum in this country put her life in jeopardy.
I understand your emotional reaction, Axe; I hope that you can in turn understand my rational reaction.
It's about time this government stopped pandering to the Liberal half of it and make good on the promise of a British Charter for such things. Europe is killing this country.
If there really is a "Liberal half", then the Government cannot reasonably be accused of "pandering" to it, since by definition it is the voice of 50% of the population. The Government may well be
listening to it, as indeed they should, as well as listening to the Conservative half.
As to our relationship with Europe, I am very much pro-European; I believe that the European Union is one of the greatest peace-keeping advances that this world has ever known. Can you really imagine Germany declaring war on England (or Poland, for that matter) today ? Can you really imagine us declaring war on France ? I cannot, and I am certainly proud (cf. the
earlier conversation with Razor and TasteTester) to be a European, both by birth and by choice.
