Tiffin Curry Sauce - Any good?
« on: November 29, 2010, 11:39 AM »
Hi

Was browsing the Spices Of India site and saw these: http://www.spicesofindia.co.uk/acatalog/Curry-Sauce.html

Just wondered if anyone here has tried any of them, and whether they are any good?

Always on the look out for things like this for when one is too busy etc....

No, never tried that one, SP.  I have (rather gullibly) tried lots of so-called "authentic" curry sauces, but they have invariably been a bitter disappointment.  Maybe this will be the one to break the losing streak !

Yes, you are right! - have shared in that misery myself.

I'l give one a try - just in case and report back if they are any good!

Cheers

Hi Solar

Good man for giving them a go, but don't hold out too much hope. Did you see the ingredients for the classic curry sauce:

Ingredients: Tomatoes 43%, Onions 15%, Water, Vegetable Oil, Tomato Puree 8%, Garlic, Ginger, Salt, Ground Coriander, Paprika, Ground Cumin, Turmeric, Chilli Powder, Mixed Spices (Garam Masala).

Imagine if we made a base with 3 times more tomato than onion, plus added 8% of the total weight with tomato puree. I'm willing to bet that isn't how they do it in their restaurant either, despite the marketing blurb at the top.

Regarding the onion/tomato ratio, perhaps they follow the Pataks method of "Fry a finely chopped onion, then add Xtbs of sauce"?

Rob, (whose on a liquids-only diet, prior to a hospital "procedure" tomorrow - and it's not even the result of over indulgence in curry, more's the pity)

Just had a look at the instructions:

Warm up the sauce, add chicken, meat or seafood and cook on a medium heat. Then add (more!) toms and green pepper and cook until the toms are soft.

Oh dear, it all sounds terribly complicated!  ;-)

Hi

I agree, they are very unlikely to be the bees knees of BIR, but its always handy to have something in the cupboard that is reasonably nice, plus quick and easy to make for after a long day at work etc.

cheers
