ASDA Deli Curry
« on: October 27, 2010, 03:37 PM »
Now I know we've had similar topics on this in the past and god knows i'm the last one to advocate supermarket ready meals, but as time moves on so do the supermarkets.

Yesterday evening I was short on time and decided to make my usual homemade Tandoori chicken using chicken thighs and a quick mix of paste I have been experimenting with. Anyway, whilst running into ASDA to get the thighs, I couldn't decide what to have with the meal and despite my better judgements, opted to go to the deli counter.

I purchased a Sag Aloo and also a Sweet Potato Dhansak, both on special from the deli counter for a

Hi

Agreed, some supermarkets are now producing some remarkably tasty off the shelf curry stuff.

Waitrose do their own Aloo Gobi Saag, Bombay potatoes, Bhaji's and Pakoras amongst other things. You can get 2 different things for ?3.

If you cannot be bothered / too tired / to busy - whatever - to cook your own sides then they are very acceptable!

I still think Sainsburys curry stuff is pretty naff and generally all supermarket mains are still quite unlike the real BIR curry they claim to be, but some are not bad at all when the time is appropriate for them.

Cheers

Maybe Admin can send some of these complimentary messages to Messrs Asda & Waitrose to encourage them to advertise their curries on this site  :)  Not so sure Sainsbury's will be impresssed, though ...

I have to agree about the Sainsburys curries being rubbish.

I tried their new expensive range chicken jalfrezi and it was awful!

I suppose it's too much to hope that anyone tried the Morrisons Saag Chicken which I recommended a few months back. If any of the Asda curries are in the same league, I must try them. Asda shelf versions (non Deli) I've tried over the years' have never impressed me much.

I haven't yet tried it George, I will be honest. It was your original topic that spurred me to post this one, I thought you might chuckle at my comments.  ;)

I can't vouch for other meals from the deli counter, I am always very wary of what they will taste like and rarely pluck the courage to buy one to try. Any we have had in the past have always been poor. But I can honestly say that these two tested dishes were delicious.

They do have some other variations that are "new" which I am quite tempted now to try. If you do wander into ASDA it would be interesting to see what you think.

Yes, it did bring a smile to my face! I will certainly try (only) the specific dishes you recommended from Asda, just like I don't rate many of the Morrisons curries - just any I specifically vouch for, although I know it's so subjective.
