Hi from Dubai
« on: September 15, 2010, 09:31 AM »
Hi Everyone,

My first post  to say hi to everybody....HIII

My husband and I have been curry/chili fans for 30 years and more. I have been trying for years to duplicate the BIR curries since moving to the middle east. (cannot get a descent curry for love nor money) I have made some delicious curries, without a base. Last week i made  a base, i used the saffron base recipe, i have made a vindaloo and a jalfrezi using Cory Anders recipe, both were absolutely deliiicious, what a brilliant site and so many dedicated people, i think your wonderful the way you have persevered to get the recipes the way you have. Looking forwards to many more dishes and so is my hubby.lol.

Hi Ruthgrundy and welcome to the forum. Glad to hear you managed to cook some cracking curries with the information on this site.

I guess you won't be using any poppy seeds though, 4 years in jail for possessing them in Dubai  :o

Cheers,

Paul

as a past ex pat from Dubai, I find it unbelievable you cannot find a good curry in Dubai.  Get your self to the RAVI restauarant at Satwa - order a chicken tikka a naan and a curry sauce - also ther butter chicken is excellent.

Try also the Khyber restaurant.

If you are looking in the phone books - look under Pakistani restaurants - NOT Indian - they differentiate precisely there as to the true origins.. Khyber dishes that excell are chicken butter boneless, Khyber special veg

I agree. I'm not an ex-pat but I've visited Dubai several times over the past 20 years. One of the highlights is the Indian food - better than almost anything I've had in the UK.

Thanks for that confirmation George - Asian food in Dubai is incredible and has been since the early 70s to my knowledge - even better than India itself in my experience (apart from the Taj Hotel - Mumbai - that is where the Gaylord chefs were trained !).

I got the Dubai intro when I moved there in '76 and had the local food knowledge passed onto me by expats working for the likes of Taylor Woodrow, Wimpey, Costains, Halcrow etc.

The Ravi @ Satwa is legendary - no one should visit Dubai without trying it out - forget the decor ! - the food is fantastic, cheap and consistent - i returned to the Ravi after 25 year gap - food just as I remembered it - your taste buds don't lie - and my grandkids absolutely loved it !
