You have to be vigilant nipping out the flowering buds to promote the bushy growth.

Many thanks for this suggestion. It's encouraged me to try again. I tried general pruning but not specific flower bud removal. I'll take photos along the way - probably next Spring, and post them here if it works out. As Pete says, it's a bit late now.

Good luck with it George.

If you nip out the buds the plant can't flower and then produce seeds, which pretty much finishes off the growing cycle. (or of course leave it if you want some seeds).  Instead the plant will continue putting all it's energy into leaf growth, which is what we want in this case. (When a plant is in flowering mode the leaf growth is secondary).
