Mixed takeaways
« on: May 03, 2010, 04:17 PM »
On the odd occasion my wife refuses a curry, and I insist on having one, we end up ordering her a pizza or kebab from my favourite indo/pakistani takeaway. They make sublime curries but their pizzas are rubbish, ditto kebabs and burgers. Ironically it is called "Chicago Pizza and Balti Bazaar", the pizza bit is first.

Nearly all local (West Leeds) pure takeaways (i.e no restaurant) try this which begs the questions:

Firstly why do they try and multi-task? Secondly, is it actually possible to do all these things well at all? Thirdly, is this a west Yorkshire thing or is it everywhere?

Hi MP,

Unfortunately mate, I think this is an ever growing trend amongst all the TA's.  Certainly here in Manchester, it's the same.

Can they do all these things well?  probably not, will that make one iota of difference to the pisshead longing for a 12" tandoori topped pizza, on their way home from a bender?  definitely not.  So as long as there is a demand, there will always be a supply.

Ray :)

which makes me think if they can learn to make italian, turkish, american dishes then why cant we learn to make curries.

id love to see a typical brit with a fish and chip shop start selling vindaloo and nans.

My favourite takeaway makes the best curries in Nottingham
But, unbelievably, sell mainly chips and kfc style chicken
They also sell pizzas
I don't think curry is loved as much
I know we are mad about it, but I suspect it may be fading in popularity

I got very angry in Chester once when I was trying to order sweet and sour chicken balls and a chicken chow mein from the chinese / chippy. They were insisting that I got a portion of chips free with each main dish.

I understand merging two types of takeaway into one as there is probably some synergy, but don't try and mix the two together. Chicken Chow Mein and Chips??? What next Sweet and Sour Chicken Vindaloo... Hmm, actually .......

The majority of mixed TA round these parts, tends to be more Kebab/Pizza/Fish n Chips. What worries me about these sort of places is that something has to give and its usually the quality of ingredients.

We still have plenty of independent and single purpose Indian TA's though and that's good enough me. Mind you, I rarely buy in anymore.

Never cared for fusion anything with Fish n Chips, it just doesn't go. I could never understand what the Northern affliction for half n half rice n chips is all about either. I'm not sure Chinese and Indian fuse either, you'd end with a Churry and that sounds painful! ;D

Strange, when I was in a certain South Coast town the other week I ended up drinking the exact same Becks lager that they serve in my spit and sawdust Northern local, only difference being the price, it's 10p a pint dearer up here!

Cheers
