Where was the best meal you have eaten?
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:50 PM »
I think we all have a memory or memories of the best meal of our lives so far, where did you go and what was the meal?
Mine was a night out with family and friends about 10 years ago to an Italian restaurant called Sophia's in Wolverhampton, the whole event from entering and being seated, the environment, busy but relaxed, being able to see into the kitchen over the counter and watch the food prepared, the drinks, jd and ice for me, and then the food.
Table salads that were so fresh, with chick peas in and a simple dressing but you could quite happily have sat and ate nothing else all evening.
For me though it was the main courses, my family you see like to try everybodies food lol, we all dip a fork into each others plates and have a taste, comparing each others to our own.
It was all gorgeous, the lasagna, the spaghetti sauces, fresh pasta, garlic breads, even the friend of the families steak and chips(always one whinger who dont like galic pah).
But my meal, wow i can still taste it after all these years, Clam Carbonara, even typing this it makes my mouth water lol, it was amazing, i cant describe it it was that nice.
So thats mine what was yours?

I've struggled to answer this, I just can't think of any one restaurant or meal that has given me any deserved all time best meal ever response. I must admit, i'm not one to dine frequently or spend a huge amount of money in classy restaurants when I do, but I have eaten in some very esteemed places over the years.

For me it comes down to the overall experience enjoyed and for that I have several, but the one most memorable was a local restaurant called The Oak Barn, when they invited myself family and close friends, to their 1st years anniversary. They put on a fantastic spread for all to enjoy ranging from freshly grilled meats to a hog roast, the biggest prawns you've ever see and so it went on. All of which was yours to pick from and devour. Coupled with a fantastic converted barn and beautiful sun drenched courtyard and local fine ale, it was truly a day to remember.

My Favourate,

mmmm, very hard to answer.  I would have to say, it was my first BIR curry (predictable, I know)

I'd gone into a place called 'Ashton King Kebab' very humble and very much old school, and unfortunately, no longer there.  I really struggled with the menu, didn't have a clue what anything was.  Luckily, a waiter spotted my dilemma and intervened.  He made a couple of suggestion, Korma, CTM but he pulled his face when he mentioned them?  Then he suggested a Dhansak.  When he explained the ingredients, I thought......no way, I can't stand fruit in curries like the ones at school, but he reassured me that I wouldn't notice.

So I opted for the chicken Dhansak.  WOW, it was beautiful, I'd never tasted a curry like it, sweet, sour, spicy but not hot, just everything balanced perfectly.  That was it, I was hooked.

I know it's a boring story, but hey ho, what can I say?  Every time I make a curry now, or when I go to a BIR, I ALWAYS think of this place, without fail.  I would even go as far as to say, as far as curry is concerned, THAT was the day I was born!!!!

My favourite was also the first time I went for a BIR meal at the Indus Resteraunt in Doncaster, sadly gone now.  I wen't with about half a dozen mates and I don't know how they persuaded me to go to this day as my house didn't do any food apart from plain old british.  Anyway I looked at the menu and ordered steak 'n' chips & a soup for starter.  Out came my soup & these big elephants ears with some brown goo & oniony stuff for my mates (now I know it as mango chutney & onion salad) I tried it and thought wow! and barely touched the soup.  Then out came the main courses. The man next to me had ordered an "Indus Special" basically a red chicken leg, orange chicken breast, red lamb & a sausage with naan & multi coulered rice.  I tried all this and hardly touched the steak n chips, that was it I was hooked, the best steak & chps I ever had, lol.  To this day my favourite meal is a Tandoori mix with a vindaloo sauce , naan & rice but none compare to that first "hit".
