Ginger Strands Look and Feel Like Bones. Help
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:50 PM »
Im just cooking a vindaloo, was following a recipe. I cut the ginger thumb into blocks and stuck it in the blender. Not I am cooking it I can see lots of ginger strands/fibers. They look like bones. I noticed this when the chicken was marinating in the fridge.

The curry is still cooking, but I really hope those fibers dissolve or become like string. The look like very thing chicken bones.

You think it will be ok to eat safely? Im very paranoid about bones. Maybe I should have chopped the ginger finer.

Hi James,

Im sure it will be perfectly safe to eat ;D

When you put the ginger in the blender, did you add a little amount of water, as this is normal practice if you want to make a ginger or garlic puree.

Even though, they may look like bones but remember, they're not! :)

I'm sure it will be fine James.  Ginger does not blend too well in small quantities.  If you're not blending a largish quantity (you can freeze what you're not going to use right away), it might be preferable to finely chop it by hand.

James,

some parts of the ginger root are more prone to others but it's real difficult to pick out until u cut it. consequently i always grate ginger with a cheese grater. i even leave the skin on. the cheese grater catches the stalk/strands u refer to which can then be binned.

ps it's a jamie oliver tip no pun intended

If its any help James I use a micro-plane (kinda a grater) but with very small cutting apertures. I use it for garlic too when I'm in a rush. I find this not only grates but emulsifies both in a short time so long as you don't take the tips of your fingers off  ;D

The strands you mention often come on top of my food, at least of late, it must be a new quirk or trend here?
Hope this helps?
