Are bay leaves and laurel leaves the same?

I have a laurel hedge around the drive ,and believe that bay leaves are laurel leaves .would I be able to use them or is there certain types of laurel.Also is there a substitute for curry leaves?

I don't think there is really a substitute for either fresh, dried or powdered curry leaf; it has a distinctive taste and smell and is quite unlike anything else that I'm aware of.
