Topic: 5 chilli plants

Just bought the 5x newspaper advertised chilli plants - 5 different types - had them @ 3 weeks now and some have flowered already and you can see the chillis forming up.

Look forward to tasting them

and they taste just great. Have frozen some, dried some , made chilli jam from some and also a chilli chutney - oh nearly forgot - a chilli flavoured olive oil too.  Apart from losing one plant while I was away in hols summer (too much water !) - rest are blazing away just fine and our now in the conservatory for the winter

Hi Ghoulie and All

Little tip ...... remove seeds from one chilli of each type and allow to dry, airing cupboard is best place, then you have seeds for next year, all my plants come from the dried chillies I have shop bought.

not at mo m8y - but I will take some - now on winter time in conservatory and all chillies picked !

Quick question guys - I have just taken tenancy of an allotment and chillies are high on my list of priorities for this coming year - I take it they should remain under glass like tomatoes? Am assuming the climate in Scotland is too mild for them ever to be put outside?

I'm in the Central Belt, Stephen. If you've seen any of my previous photos on this topic, you'll see my chilli plants do well on both east and south facing window cills. I can't say I've had any joy with putting them out in a polytunnel or greenhouse. I HAVE tried, believe me!

Even in these dreich, wet and shortening days, I still have some of the plants flowering and all are still producing fruit - even the Scotch Bonnets and Habeneros.

Maybe you are a bit more sunny and sheltered where you live, so greenhouse growing wouldn't be totally out of the question, but as you know, we can have surprise frosts at most times of the year and your chillis would probably be severely damaged if left out of doors.
