Before I got settled on a curry base, I experimented a lot
I got quite good results using canned tomatoes, garlic and ginger
If you check out Pat Chapmans first restaurant curry book, there is a recipe called Pakistani Curry Gravy
This involves milk,canned tomatoes,oil,sugar & salt
Ther are a few spices in it too including garlic powder (it has to be garlic powder)
It's really good
My kids loved this recipe for years

This sounds like the sort of base that is more appropriate to a Korma. Surely there is no base (for the maojority of curries) that is not made using onion as the main ingredient.

In most base sauces, onions make up the BULK of the ingredients, with smaller quantities of: oil; garlic; ginger; some form of tomarto (tinned, puree or the 'real thing'); spice.  Some contain capsicum; celery; carrot; cabbage; potato.  But typically one per 10 to 20 onions!

I tried the pakistani curry gravy mentioned above, years ago when pat Chapmans first book came out.  It's Ok, but gives results nothing like a BIR curry.

Perhaps you're alergic to onions?  In which case you probably would not eat BIR food so you wouldn't miss it....

don't have a recipe but Chinese and Thai curry's come to mind.

i guess Chinese is made from veg oil and know that Thai is made from coconut milk/cream (the thai green curry I make has onions in but u could leave them out).

Having thought a little about this, I bet you could a base without onions by supplementing with other veg. Guaranteed it wouldn't be the same but you could get the consistency about right and by the time you knocked your spices in etc the end result could be ok.

I'm thinking tinned tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peppers, celery and mooli raddish.
