Hi,
I just wanted to quickly introduce myself.
I live in Berlin (germany) since I am half english - half german and had a moreless
british upbringing, my love for curries started very early. My parents used to take me to Gaylords in London in the seventees. Just loved it. Living in germany makes finding a good curry quite difficult. There are loads of indian restaurants here, but almost all sell bland and boring food, that is mor like a boring stew than anything else.
There is atleast one resturant that is quite good - the best one was a tiny littly place that looked a bit like a takeaway. The first time I ate there I was overcome with homesickness and never wanted to leave again. Since then it had become a bit of a routine to go there - but the restaurant went out of business, the few hardcore "real" curry lovers could not keep it alive. Most other people were blown away by the spices, since they were used to this babyfood curry.
The chef became a friend of mine and since I was desperate for his food, he sometimes cooks for me and delivers - a very special service and I am very grateful for it. He is a great guy and he promissed that should he leave Berlin, he will show me how to cook the food.
Meanwhile at home, I have been cooking curries with Pataks and before Sharwoods.
Easy and tatsy, but completely different from restaurant style. So I did some Julie Sahni recipes, they were damn good - but quite a bit of work.
Then I came across David Smith's Curry house cookbook. I really like it, the Madras is wonderful - even though there is never enough sauce and it is on the dry side, but it is delicious and not too much work.
Looking into the curry base recipes here, I must say that I do not think I will try the best ones at home, my ktchen is to small and it would completely stink out my flat - shame though...
Ah well, the introduction is longer than I expected, but now you moreless kno who I am...
yours,
Currykraut

Hi CurryKraut,
Welcome to the family. Some of the base recipes on here do give off a bit of a pong and tend to linger for a day or so. Maybe if you pick one you really fancy having a go at you could ask those who have done it how bad it smells. If all else fails throw open your windows and wait for all the homesick ex-pats to come a knocking
. all the best....mike
