Nuking the taste buds

Fresh apricots have appeared in the shops in the last few days, and I have been making batches of apricot compote so as not to be entirely dependent on Bonne Maman. I made a fresh batch last night, left it to cool and set, and this morning decanted it into its final container. Of course, I ate some on the way ...
Then I made my first coffee of the day, and thought when I tasted it that I had forgotten the sugar (normally two coffee spoonsful), so I added more; then I drank my second cup, and had exactly the same experience. I then realised that the apricot compote had overloaded my sweetness receptors, and I therefore temporarily needed twice as much sugar as normal in my coffee to achieve the same sweetness as I would normally achieve with just half!
