What (if one may ask) is the relevance/significance of John Peel in this context, onions.  And was the reference to John Peel as in "D'ye ken ..." or as in "A personal take on music" ?

Perhaps slightly opaque, yes. Billy Bragg- who you doubtless know as the 'Bard of Barking'- took Peel a biryani and mushrooms bhaji one night at the BBC studios, and slipped a demo tape in the bag with it. Hence the Peel played it, gave him a session, and the rest, as they say, is listerine.
