Just had my first BIR takeaway for a quite a while
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:07 PM »
There was very little flavour other than lots of salt and sugar. I have just realised that my own curries are now better. I feel a bit sad about it.

All the take always in our town now serve bright red chicken. It all tastes the same (not particularly nice) and looks far too garish. I'm off to Cafe Spice next week and Tayyabs the week after so I expect to get something better.

I struggle to find BIR takeaway that's better than my own - I think it's a plateau that most of us reach.

totally agree with all of the above.

first takeaway i've had in 9 or 10 weeks.

just spent 19 tokens on a meal for 2 (including delivery.lol) from (shall remain nameless)
couldn't order from my normal place as they don't deliver this far.

poppadoms - binned
spiced onions - binned
chicken bhoona - totally bland - binned (nuclear red colour - says it all)
beef vindaloo - passable (only because i've had a few beers)
pilau rice - tasteless and well overcooked/sticky clumpy mass of shit
naan bread - insipid tasteless crispy crap

overall, my home made efforts of late blow these poor imitations out of the water.

I ordered my first takeaway for about 2 months
http://bombaytakeaway.com/index.php
It was absolutely incredible
Head and shoulders above anywhere else I have been in the last year
If I could cook like this I would die a happy man
The flavour of their curry sauces is amazing
No obvious spice comes through but there is this wonderful underlying taste
I can't wait to order again
Even the saag bhajee had this fantastic flavour
That was mainly spinach from a can with a few slices of onion, but however they cooked it obviously involved some sort of magic

two members of my family are vegetarian so we don't normally order meat curries
That way we can all share what we have

We got
Paneer rhogan josh
this had extra tomato and garlic with their wonderful garvy

Paneer Balti
this had chunks of fried onion and pepper with loads of sauce

Vegetable vindaloo
Lots of chilli powder and very saucey
Believe me, it was incredible!

Saag bhajee
As described above
Fantastic

The secret with this place is in their base
It's in everything they cook
How do they do it?
I don't know if it inspires me to try better or simply give up
I just couldn't get enough of it

Only one critsism is that the rice is not basmatti
It's just long grain rice
It's still ok, though

I have just a tried another takeaway but this time from a highly rated BIR restaurant.

The dishes were not very oily... but there was a strong taste in each dish that wasn't good. I tried some again when it had gone cold and then realised the taste was of old deep fat fryer oil.

An interesting thing to learn from was that the Rogan Josh certainly had a lot of smoked paprika in it. I know that taste because I often cook with it. It was as if the chef had put too much in.

Whilst I am having a moan... it has been a very long time since I have had a good naan bread. These days they all seem to be very heavy and burnt a lot.
