Thank you, Rob.  Wife now on her way to Leytonstone by train, then I will recce tomorrow and report if the flooded area might be fordable (she is willing to wade through it if necessary, but I have to first make sure she can't be swept away ...).

Take care Phil, have seen the floods on the news and it looks awful - we have escaped worst of this weather at the moment though I believe it is now heading north. Hope all works out and best wishes to you and your loved ones.

Many thanks, Steve.  We will indeed take great care -- my wife may not be risk-averse, but I most certainly am !

I'm sure we all have many non curry-related wishes - that wasn't really the point of the thread.

I hope it all works out, Phil, and the woman you love makes it safely to your arms...(moderated)

Just kidding of course - hope it turns out well xx

Le Khanh & I went cycling this morning, and she decided she would like to visit Lees Road in Yalding, through which we had not been able to pass the afternoon before as it was completely flooded and three inflatable rescue boats were being deployed. We made it as far as Yalding bridge, and then realised how insignificant our little roof leak is in comparison to the losses suffered by the poor folk of Yalding. The bridge itself was clear of water, as had been our route up until that point, but beyond the bridge was just flooded chaos. House after house completely flooded (to the point where the owners could not even get in to salvage downstairs valuables), and one lady told my wife -- virtually in tears -- that she had lost everything : her house was not insured. It was awful. My heart goes out to those poor folk, many of whom looked as if they had not slept at all since the floods started.
