Curry King,

Apart from the oil i cant see what's bad in a curry, correct me if i am wrong but;

Spice - all good
Onions - good
Meat or prawns - good
Tomato - all good
Chili - good

I keep trying to justify that there good...they must be ???
I use vegetable oil that should lower cholesterol

OK basmati rice is not too good but you can substitute for Organic Brown Rice....which is all good.

S
ok shoot me down people

Yeah its mainly the oil thats the problem but if you try making any of the gravys we use without the oil it comes out tasting cack.? My girlfriend spoke to an indian restaraunt manger the other day, he said they don't touch the currys they serve up due to them being very bad for you!

I can't give up BIR curry I just need something else to eat on the other day of the week?im not eating Vindaloo  ;D

Try rapeseed oil (it's supposed to lower cholesterol, like olive oil). Unfortunately, It'll still make you fat as it has a similar amount of calories as normal veg oil. It's taste is neutral.

The problem with eating less homemade curry is it will take longer to discover innovations and improvements.

I know that "slimming world" have a curry recipe book that you can get on ebay, but I doubt if they will be restaurant style.
With regards to "healthy" I also love pasta and was wondering if there was a light curry sauce you could add to it? sounds yukky but i'll try anything once.... ;D ;D ;D

Hi Scrufts,

Slimming World don't do restaurant style at all.

They don't like Oil so you are off to a bad start straight away.
However, most of the other ingredients of a curry ie, Onions, Garlic, Tomato, the Chicken (if not pre-cooked with oil) and spices are quite acceptable in Slimming World's repertoire and I lost two stone on their diet while still troughing loadsa "oil free" curry.........................theirs hope for us all yet. The taste lacked a bit which shows the oil is an important factor.
Most of their recipes are invented by Slimming World members so tend to taste very "home made".

I have seen a few curry recipes including Pasta. There is one that uses Pasta in the "100 best Balti Book". I will try to get it posted for you.

Hi CK

I recently wrote to Andy Holmes (of the upcoming Kushi Authentic Balti Book) about a follow-up book
with healthier curries. Kushi do their own healthy curries at the restaurant. This is what Andy had to say...

...............
I'm also grateful for your suggestion about a "follow-up" book.
We've had this idea also - and HAD hoped to include a chapter on healthier curries in our current book.
Unfortunately, as we found ourselves having to go down the "self-publishing" route, we found it necessary to keep costs (to us and our readers) as low as possible by concentrating on "mainstream" dishes only.
However, the book's thrown up a lot of interest in these healthier dishes, and we'll definitely consider your suggestion.
If we do plan such a book, you'll be the first to know.
Many thanks for your interest...................

So although the new Balti book looks like its going to concerntrate on mainstream dishes
there might be a healthier version in the pipeline.. guess it depends on how well they sell
the first one first...

I hope they do create a healthier version with all the taste of a mainstream curry!
My wife does too :)

Have been down this road myself too.  I have made onion gravy without oil in it all and it is not recommended to be used by myself.  Basically it has no point value in it at all with regards to Weightwatchers pointing system, the only points would be for the chicken, 3 points for a chicken breast and about 2 points for half pound of prawns.  To go with this it would have to be boiled basmati rice using all the usual spices.  I too have lost 36 pounds using weightwatchers.  I save my treat for Saturday nights and have only a teaplate of the REAL THING instead of mounds of it and I am still losing the pounds.   See, a little of what you fancy! It's called self control.
