« on: April 16, 2013, 01:05 AM »
Well if it wasn't for CA saying the forum was still here i would have given up altogether - the bookmarked page i had for CRO has been showing as a suspended page for a few days now. Ie its not available - anyhow after CA saying its still here a quick search and hey presto all you guys are back - great to have found it again

best, Rich

I have the following link book marked so was unaware of any outage.

http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?action=unread

Out of curiosity and to help Stew, what link did you have Rich?

The earlier URL for the site was http://(www.)cr0.co.uk/, Malc, and many people will have bookmarked that; there was a redirect in place initially, but that has now been withdrawn.

I know nothing about websites, but can i assume it costs money to keep an old domain just to redirect to the new site?
(i thought these were free websites?)

Also, if they are paid for domains, would it still cost to just show a link to the new site rather than a redirect?
Just makes me wonder/worry if Rich thought the site was down and out(his last visit being not that long ago), how many other members will have given up when they decide to check in?  :-\

There's no such thing as a free web site, if you want any control over its content !  The CR0 domain will remain valid until November 2014 (at which point Stew can elect to renew it, if he wishes); it may be that he is trying to phase out all reliance on the old name, which would explain why the re-direct is no longer in place.  In general, a re-direct costs nothing, but that will depend on the hosting organisation, which is http://servercentre.net/; they may have a different charging policy to Joker, which I use.  FWIW, I would recommend pointing CR0 at a more informative page, inviting people to bookmark the new one, for an overlap of not less than six months and ideally for one year.

I used to be part of a big gaming site where there were in-house teams created. These teams then made spin-off sites linked to the main site by links on peoples profile pages. The sites were completely free as far as i knew and the only drawback was limited templates and lots of ads.
Not sure what you mean by control over content?

Exactly that !  No enforced templates, no enforced advertisements.

Ok, I thought you meant written content. Well its not so bad being stuck with one template(sometimes a change can be for the worst) and ads can be blocked like they all are on here and all other websites for me 8)

Flashblock and Adblock plugins, couldn't live without them.  ;)
