Well folks, her indoors has just polished off a big portion of this and has said it's better than the local TA. Less oily and more flavour.

What are the consequences of not adding 5tbsp of oil at the start?

I really don't like oily curry.  I think that 3tbsp is a lot, never mind 5!!!

Just another question on the base, how long does it last in the fridge?  Do people freeze it or does become inedible??  I've got about 3 litres and won't be making 10 curries!!!

I have just ordered one today.  I ordered the SS1 Ultimo so hoping it will be big enough.  There are only 4 of us so it should be OK.
