It was more the point that it has Smoked Paprika in it that made me chuckle when I read it, given our previous conversation.

I wonder if it might be worth searing or grilling the outside first, before the slow cook. That will add that extra bite from the rub and help with the smoky flavours. Passata can be quite a sponge when it comes to spices.
