Supermarkets

Our little town used to have a few independent butchers and greengrocers etc. But when Tesco and Safeway arrived some years back those little shops were pushed out of business. My wife and I have always shopped on the basis that if you don't use it you lose it but unfortunately most people deserted to the two big chains and our independents gave up the ghost and closed down. Imagine my frustration on Saturday when we agreed on Ratatouille as our veg for the night only to find neither of the big grocers had either aubergine or courgette stocked. We had to travel 10 miles the next day to Sainsbury's at Chelmsford to find what we had wanted the night before. And it all used to be on our doorstep. So sad!

There's apparently a big shortage of courgettes at the moment... Although why anyone would want to buy imported "summer" veggies in winter is beyond me. I say support British producers and buy what's in season.
