Here is a copy of the links I provided in a post I made regarding this in the "Curry and Rice" thread. It is more on topic here so I've copied and pasted rather than link to the original thread. For this dodgy view to be prevailing there must be a lot of people who subscribe to it.
"Cooking for a crowd using Curry Club Spice blends? If using double quantities of meat or veg you do not need to double the other ingredients as well. Instead use 1.5 times the quantity of other ingredients [including the spice blend]. For example 1 cup of yoghurt in a 500g curry will become 1.5 cups in a 1kg curry."
"According to the editors of Easy Home Cooking Magazine, a double recipe should include only 1.5 times the amount of seasonings the original recipe called for. The same goes for alcohol, baking powder and baking soda."
