I used split red lentils as I had them in already. Will be getting some more when I do the shopping :)

Gotta say, and i'm no lentil person, but Colin's recipe is top notch.  The only danger is whether there'll be enough lentils left to add to the dhansak  :o  The main problem being, trying to avoid the temptation to dip into the dhall before it gets added to the dhansak  ;D ;D
