Cooking Equipment / Re: Portable propane burner
« on: July 24, 2014, 12:12 PM »
The gas canisters are on a 3 for 2 at halfords - as are the cookers themselves.  I don't suppose you have a need for 3 cookers - but i'm going to give them to friends.

At 1.50 each, on a 3-for-2 that comes to 1 pound per gas canister.

At 10 pounds each, on a 3-for-2 it comes to 6.67 per cooker.

If you want something larger, and stronger - i got one of these, but it needs a large propane or butane bottle:

I found a nice 16"/40cm steel karahi on eBay.  The chap doesn't have any 16" ones listed now, but does have 14" ones.

Not much bidding on these - expect the pay the opening bid.

I'm still keen to get a wide flat Thai type wok - will keep my eyes out.  Did see one on Amazon, but silly money.

If you are going to Delhi, take some vids and post them!

I envy some of the cooking vessels they use in those street videos.  Of course, i'd never use one, but it doesn't mean I don't want one :)  Anyone know where you can get those giant Karahis or Tawas in the UK?

The Pav Bhaji's are all pretty much the same.  I spoke to a mate who is from Calcutta and says Pav Bhaji is pretty ubiquitous all over India.  He says bread-rolls are considered to be quite posh in a country that eats flat-breads or rice - which I found quite funny  ;D  Pav Bhaji is always made with vegetables, lots of butter, and the Pav Bhaji spice mix (which i've seen in the UK).    If you look at all three of the pav bhaji videos above, they are all pretty much the same.

ThEy are the real deal.  It's all that is used in India.  We use them for all our cooking (Indian or not) at home.

These onions are a bit smaller, but very sweet and drier, so cook down and caramelise very well.  My local Asian shop calls they Bombay onions, and they are imported from India.  I see tesco sells similar ones which I think are gown in the UK (and tend to be fresher as a result) called Rosanna onions.

They have a pink skin between the onion layers inside like a red onion, but pink.  These onions are similar to what you get in the Mediterranean on salads.  Very leasing on the palate when eaten raw.

Stumbled on this forum - thought I would join up.

Based in the South East of the UK - love cooking, particularly outdoor cooking, street food, and cooking for a crowd/entertaining.

I have a bit of a fetish for rustic/retro cookware - like wrought iron Karahis, or whatever looks functional and beautiful.  I love my cast iron!

I'm keen to get one of those giant iron Karahi's you sometimes see street food vendors use.  Not that I I'll use it much, but they just look cool!
