I'm reaching a point where I have too many recipes floating around inside my head and I need to get them noted down in a way that will prevent me losing them. Just wondering how you note down your recipes, whether post it notes taped to the kitchen cupboards, or perhaps you've entered the computer age and have some kind of software based solution with online backups, etc...
While many of the recipes I refer to are on this forum, I don't like to depend on an external service and would hate to lose access to these recipes if the forum disappeared.

I copy mine into notepad on the pc, then save into the relevant folders that i posted in my first ever post on this forum.
Frank. :)

same as above.
I copy and past into word docs.
I also download any videos that I find useful

Same, copy and paste into a MS Word doc.
Easy to make changes to, if you tweek them to your own taste.
I then print out my favs and put them in a folder (with plastic inserts), for using when cooking.

Like others I store on PC in folders - see screenshot

Hi NJ,
I write/type out my recipes on a word doc and save in the relevant folder ie; Curry Recipes, Starter Recipes, Supplementary Recipes and so on. I then print them out, laminate them and pop them into a A5 binder, creating a recipe book if you like. I also accompany each of the recipes with a photo, just to show what the end result should look like.
Even 'er in doors' picks up my recipe book for a quick look, unfortunately, she doesn't treat it as a recipe book but treats it more like her own personal 'Takeaway Menu' that delivers for free :(

Google Docs here. Accessible from everywhere and don't have to worry about backups. Nice and simple.
I have a very simple folder structure: Recipes > Indian. Everything goes into the one folder.

Me too. So there will be dozens of recipes starting with the the words "base sauce" followed by the author/source name, all filed within the same "Indian recipes" folder.
I use Notepad, like DalPuri, rather than the highly inefficient MS Word program. Even if you have a hard drive with 25Tb capacity why take up far more space with Word than you do with Notepad?
-
Interesting that so many cut-and-paste into Word or Google docs.
I've always just bookmarked them within my browser.
That said, I've worried from time-to-time "what if I can't get internet?"

Interesting replies. I like the google docs idea for its resilience and assumed permanence.
-
natterjack,
i've just collated mine into a single page - it's surprisingly useful as it raises all sorts of questions on comparing the individual recipes produced separately and over time.
-
All my recipes, vids and info go into 3 folders, (one for each category) which I then make into a rar/zip file and put on cd/dvd, You never know when that little blighter of a PC is going to crash ;)

For the same reasons as Les above .. I write mine longhand into an old diary .. it's only for curries and related stuff so I'd be well peeved if I lost it !! :)

Hi NJ
I have used my ipad to capture the relevant recipe as a photo snapshot and so have a photo album on the ipad entitled curry stuff. I also intend to print these off at some stage as I have a printer linked to it with airprint facility :)

I just want to add that i use notepad because its so Simple. I hate anything that is memory hungry and takes an age to open.
I also save the folders in 3 places just incase... ;)
Desktop pc, Laptop and Memory stick.

I agree. Why use google docs? What's the advantage over notepad? Even just logging on to google must run the risk that they can monitor everything you do. I don't trust them.

Copies, copies and even more copies ::) 1. Main curry folder on two laptops with menu folders within, similar to Stephen Lindsay along with folders for bases, starters, mains, breads, deserts and so on. 2. Copies of this folder onto two external harddrives. 3. A copy on a memory stick. 4. Printed copies kept in a binder. 5. Lastly, copies sent to my on-line email. Anal I know but! ::)

Hi
I have all the recipes I fancy in my untried curries folder in a format similar to CA's recipes. I have all the tried and tested curries, starters etc in my best recipes section laid out like a menu. I then have my finished recipes i.e. the recipes I am 100% happy with, in a laminated ring binder so dont get curry splashes as I found I would be printing them out all the time then throwing out the paper.
George - Are you ex CIA or just paranoid?? I dont think google or anyone else is going to be too interested in what curries people are eating.

Barry

just to add my approach.
Over the years I have purchased books, collected cuttings and made notes stored in folders.
I decided to use the technology I had already bought and gave it a try.
I currently use an iPad along with my PC (Mac)
I wanted to bring together some of the YouTube videos along with the ingredients all on one screen.
I used the Keynote app to bring it all together
As the video plays in a window I can read the ingredients and keep up in real 'cooking' time in the kitchen.
As this was mainly for practice I have built up a library of notes and recipes stored in the ipads ebook/pdf facility.
Yes, a bit of a faff I know, but everything is kept together on the move and is a good reference when I'm at work and need to buy some ingredients on the way home.

Notwithstanding what I said in support of keeping things simple, I really like your approach, including the very neat bookshelf graphics. It just goes to show, though, how essential it is to have ingredients mentioned somewhere alongside a video, which is something that not everyone does - no text, no spoken word, nothing. So however the information is recorded and organised, it will be sadly lacking.
-
petrolhead - love it!!! I am all for the song and dance approach :)

Petrol head. Interesting approach, thanks. Since I don't need all the functionality of keynote I'm considering the merits of either of the following apps: "My Recipe Book, Your Recipes finally organised" or "Paprika Recipe Manager". Sadly I don't think either would allow for video to be imported into a recipe listing in the way your implementation does, but maybe that would be added in the future.
-
Am I the only one who still uses yellow post-its with orange finger prints and some illegible scrawl that only makes sense the day you wrote it?
-
Petrolhead that's great that! I was thinking of doing a similar sort of thing but think I will start of the with the folder and wallet way first. I too download video footage as it always comes in handy when trying to make the recipe exact to what you see rather than copying it step by step off paper :-)
-
I'm a little like petrolhead.
I make all my recipes into word documents and save them onto my PC. I then just select whichever recipe I want to use, then plug my laptop into the TV in the kitchen and bring it up on screen, where I can read it whilst I am cooking.
No need to print it off where it can get lost or get stuff spilt on it.

A couple of the members have mentioned downloading videos from you-tube, could you tell me which softwear you use please,(and Free ;D) I'm having a bit of trouble finding a good one,
thanks

Les,
Assuming you're using a PC, first visit the youtube page of the video you wish to save, then you can simply edit the URL in your browser's address bar to insert the word "save" before YouTube. So www.youtube.com/xyz123 (http://www.youtube.com/xyz123) becomes www.saveyoutube.com/xyz123 (http://www.saveyoutube.com/xyz123).
It's been a whole since I used this method and I'm nowhere near a PC to check it now, but trust it still works? It's by far the simplest method I know.

Sadly now past its sell-by date :
"SaveYouTube is shutting down! Please visit SaveMedia.com instead. Make sure to update your bookmarks!"
I have never used saveyoutube, so do not know whether the savemedia service will be comparable; I use the "Flashgot" plug-in for the Gecko family (Seamonkey, Firefox, ...).

PS
It will install the ASK toolbar, but you can just get rid of it if you don't want it

I have used this one for a while & it works well.

It's a .exe, so treat with caution, but I have just scanned it with all tools at my disposal and it seems clean. First-time downloaders : make sure you click on the right download button; the large one is to a completely different and unrelated product that you almost certainly don't want ...

Hi Phil
Like you mate i trust no one, ;) I also scanned it and found it clean

According to their web site, it costs $29.95 USD for each year (unless I have mis-read it); also again beware the large green (ubiquitous) "Download now" button (which is completely unrelated) and follow the in-text link : "Download the program : Click here (http://keepvid.com/program/KeepVid.exe) to download latest version of the KeepVid for Windows (1.142). *updated 13/08/2011*"

Oh, too bad. Sorry for the out of date info. I always wondered how they got away with using "YouTube" as part of the name of their service. Guess YouTube's lawyers put paid to that.

Petrolhead, looks very good indeed. I'm with Bob though, I tend to save all my recipes in Word. The ones I cook most often I have printed and hung on the inside of my spice cupboard door.
