Title: Krups grinder
Post by: Salvador Dhali on March 08, 2012, 02:42 PM
I've wanted a Waring professional spice grinder for some time now (http://www.catertrade.co.uk/Waring-CD409-Waring-Spice-Grinder/ (http://www.catertrade.co.uk/Waring-CD409-Waring-Spice-Grinder/)), but at

Hi Gary,

Last time I looked that one seemed to be the best for the price after reading all the amazon reviews on it.
You've reminded me I need one as I'm planning to make the Az garam masala.

Cheers,

Paul

I know Amazon reviews aren't always on the money, but this is one of the few products that generates over 50% of 5-star ratings (and from 224 reviews, too), and I don't think you'll be disappointed, Paul. Having used it a bit more today, I can report that it works really well - especially if you don't overload it.

Underneath the top layer of coriander in the above pic, I was delighted to discover a satisfyingly fine powder at the bottom of the grinder, so I've been experimenting with three or four ten second bursts, which gives me what I'm after without generating too much friction heat.

As said, not a pro grinder by any means, but great for what it is...

...And for 18 quid if it blows up after six months I'm not going to lose any sleep over it...

Well, SD, did it blow up after 6 months - or is it still going strong? :)

I'm looking for a suitable machine just now, so, almost a year on from initial ownership, would you recommend the Krups grinder?

I'm happy to report that I've used it every week for the last 10.75 months and it has failed to explode!

While I'd urge caution when it comes to whole nutmegs, house bricks, etc., it copes with general spice grinding duties admirably, so yes, I would definitely recommend it.

Had one for a couple of years now. Excellent. Struggled once with a heavy piece of rolled cinnamon stick and you need to watch out for spices heating too much. Viz. give it a break now and then. Easy to clean ( remember the raw rice trick ) although like anything it does tend to retain the smell of what was ground last.

Haha! The unanticipated belly-laugh caught me out! :)

Thanks to both SD and RD - the Krups it is then.

Oh! Now you're putting me off!  ;)

Just kidding, but actually, it's a tenner dearer now than it was a year ago. Also, there appears to be a direct replacement model rebadged as a Tefal with 10g less capacity for around 20 quid.

May have to have a rethink now...

...Just two quick searches...

Many thanks, RD. Can't think how I missed that - be something age-related, no doubt! :)

Must now admit ( and having had direct dialogue with the OP ) I have had the Waring for a week or so now. Certainly does the job and is of course in a different league to the rest ( Krups included ). This comes at a price but a price worth paying considering the diversity of use already put to. I do also like the 3 metal pots supplied with sealing lids which adds versatility. eg I have used one to do a large lump of Parmigiano and is now stored quite happily in the fridge .  Gonna give it a go now on a house brick  ;)

I am obviously delighted for you, RD, and not even a little bit jealous.

Well, maybe a little bit...

Okay, okay - godammit!

I'm GREEN with envy!  ;D ;D ;D

 8) go on. , you know it makes sense, you owe it to yourself, you have worked all these years just for this moment. Who wears the trousers? ( do not answer that ). Lie to her? Buy her a nice pair of boots? Do a deal? Rob a bank? Sell your spleen?
