Title: CR0 BBQ This Saturday!
Post by: chriswg on August 01, 2011, 11:42 AM
Hi all,

Great to see so many have signed up for the BBQ on Saturday. It seems to have come around quite quickly now! There is still plenty of room for more, it's a massive park so space wont be an issue. The long term forecast is looking good too so fingers crossed!

For those who haven't signed up yet, the plan is to meet at Frimley Lodge Park on Saturday at around 11:30am. If everyone brings along their best curry based dishes we can cook / heat them up there and sample everyone's handy-work. I'm planning on taking some chicken tikka and Roshney Sauce to heat up along with beers / soft drinks and crisps e.t.c. I'll take a big container full of ice to keep the drinks cool, plus a cool box for the meats. I'm sure there will end up being way too much food but that can only be a good thing - I assume we all have healthy appetites!

If you want to come post a reply to this thread or drop me an IM. It's very much a family friendly day so bring wives and kids if you like. I'll take footballs and bats and balls e.t.c. to keep the kids busy, plus there is a big playground there and possibly a miniature train you can pay 50p to have a ride on.

I'm still hoping Nipoori Man will get a Nipoori to us in time to test and play with, plus I'm expecting Az from Chutneys to be there to sample our food and give advice as well as bringing a few samples of his own.

Does anyone have a gas ring they can bring? If not I might be able to get hold of one but we are running out of time a bit.

The postcode for Sat-Navs is GU16 6NS, there is lots of info about it here - http://www.surreyheath.gov.uk/leisure/parksandrecreationareas/frimleylodgepark.htm (http://www.surreyheath.gov.uk/leisure/parksandrecreationareas/frimleylodgepark.htm)

See you all there, it should be a cracking day!

Chris

Hi

With regard to a burner - I could bring one of these:

Or one of these:

Although, the second is an 8Kw beast - it is rather difficult to cook on due to the huge spacing between the supports.

Will need to be a little frugal with the gas as it is needed for a camping trip later this month.

What do we think will be best? probably the top option?

Will try to bring a load of cooked Saag Aloo, a load of raw Razors kebab mix to cook (hopefully someone can show me how to make it into a kebab that does not fall off the skewer ;) ), beers etc.

I assume we should all bring disposable plates and knives / forks etc?

Plates and cutlery sound like a good idea, I hadn't given that any thought  ::)

I'll probably take a few packs of wraps or pitta breads to make the food a bit easier to eat. I wonder if you can heat up onion bhajis on a BBQ?

I think the top burner will suffice. The bottom one is a beaut but will really cane the gas. I think most people will make the sauces at home and just need to heat them up there.

If anyone fancies bringing a massive batch of Pilau rice that would be great. We could either try and heat it up, or just have it chilled. I'm sure the sauces will heat it up just fine.

Sounds great, how spicy do you make it?

Oh..... It's hot!!! :)

I use dried habenaro chilies which I then re-hydrate in hot water for around 15 minutes :), I can make it milder if people prefer.....

You don't need to have signed up - if anyone wants to come then come along. The more the merrier.

Argh, this has snuck up on me : I though it was still several weeks away :-(  As it is this Saturday, I have to be honest and say I am unlikely to be able to make it; there is just too much going on at the moment for me to be able to carry out the necessary preparations (like cooking !) in time.  If somehow a miracle occurs and I do find time to make something, then I will obviously do my very best to attend, but at the moment the likelihood is not very great.  Sorry.

Hi Chris i use these http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=take+away+foil+containers&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rlz=1R2DKUK_en-GBGB395&tbm=isch&tbnid=claQytMrnleu4M:&imgrefurl=http://www.tulipcatering.co.uk/products/disposables.html&docid=C0KuXWpv6QQndM&w=500&h=500&ei=lK03TpvpG4Ow8gPa05DmAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=128&vpy=99&dur=126&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=99&ty=118&page=1&tbnh=113&tbnw=116&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0&biw=1024&bih=533 (http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=take+away+foil+containers&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rlz=1R2DKUK_en-GBGB395&tbm=isch&tbnid=claQytMrnleu4M:&imgrefurl=http://www.tulipcatering.co.uk/products/disposables.html&docid=C0KuXWpv6QQndM&w=500&h=500&ei=lK03TpvpG4Ow8gPa05DmAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=128&vpy=99&dur=126&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=99&ty=118&page=1&tbnh=113&tbnw=116&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0&biw=1024&bih=533)
Whenever i go camping. I have cooked rice, bhajis, chicken tikka and pakoras (ALL pre-cooked) in them, just place them on the warming rack of the BBQ if you havent got a warming rack just place on the BBQ.You might need to put a little water into the rice.

Hi Phil

Don't stress if you feel you don't have time to cook anything. I am sure there will be plenty of stuff already :) - but if you really have too much on to make it, then no problem.

Cheers

Yeah same here Phil will try to get there (about a 3 hour drive) but cant promise as we are already going away this Saturday for a couple of days.
Got the postcode so will see what happens, would be great to place faces to the names (and comments).
What time does everything start off?
Might not be able to bring anything food wise.

As Solar said - there will already be way too much food so don't frett about bringing stuff, especially if you have a long drive.

It will go on from 11am - 4pm and people can come and go as they please, I'll be there all the time but I imagine all the best food will be cooked and eaten by 2pm. By then I'm hoping to be sitting back with a couple of cold cans of beer.

I love the idea of using the metal trays as mini ovens by the way. I'll have to see if I can get some.

Don't stress if you feel you don't have time to cook anything.

There's always BIR take-aways and supermarkets, of course.

Take-away food might be useful as a comparison with anything we prepare.
Supermarkets are loaded with stuff which is suitable for a barbecue.

I'm hoping Az is going to bring some stuff from the take away to compare against.

As Solar said - there will already be way too much food so don't fret about bringing stuff, especially if you have a long drive.

I confess this is a very attractive idea, but with one major shortcoming : if I were to turn up, having prepared nothing, and then proceed to scoff everyone else's food, I would feel unbelievably mean and guilty.  So here is an idea, for Chris to accept or reject as he wishes : how about a voluntary donation (say GBP 10-00) from those who turn up with nothing, which can then be used to defray the expenses of all those who have gone to the trouble of buying and preparing something ?  I would be more than happy to toss in my GBP 10-00 in these circumstances.

Phil

A suggestion from the heart indeed  :)

I cannot comment for everyone - obviously, but perhaps a safer idea - just in case there is not enough grub, why not just purchase a small quantity of reasonable quality bangers or similar BBQ grub from a butchers on route. No need to go mad.

I know its a CR0 (curry inspired) BBQ - but seriously - who can turn down a BBQ banger? or use you imagination. No need to spend loads... I'm bringing I hope far more than my lot needs, but just in case - I hate to see people disappointed that's all :)

Looking forward to meeting everyone :)

Cheers

Hi Phil

Why don't you bring a selection of crisps, dips and bottles of soft drinks. They are just as important to have but don't take any preparation. We'll all tuck into those and you won't have to feel guilty about helping us get through the vast amount of meat and sauces we'll be bringing :)

The weather forecast is looking dry for the day!

Hi,

I would love to come to this weekend bbq as it would have given me a chance to meet many of our members in person and share and taste many different dishes. However I will not be able to make it but I wish everyone to have a great time and share some of the pictures, videos and comments of the day with us all. I look forward to reading and watching them  :)

share some of the pictures, videos and comments of the day with us all.

I certainly don't want to be a stick in the mud but is Chris' comment still valid with everyone?

i.e. "...on the subject of photos, especially if we are taking partners and kids. Anyone that wants to be in a group 'men round the BBQ' shot for the website is welcome, but otherwise, lets just have a great day without anyone worrying about lots of photos."

More people should be going if they want to meet and greet. This really does seem like too good an opportunity to miss. I'm amazed that only half a dozen members (approx) are registered as attending. That's out of a supposed 11000 members and a good few dozen who frequent the forum.

Hi Guy's,

I really really hope you all have a great day.  I am so gutted that I cannot attend.  I have explained to Chris the reasons for my absence and I don't mind him sharing that info with you guy's at the BBQ.

I think this is possibly/potentially, the best thing that has happened on cr0 for some time and, weather permitting, it's going to be a great day out.

I personally would love to see many many pictures and videos but totally understand people not wanting their identity splashed all over the net.  I'm sure that with some very careful photo selection, there won't be a problem.

Well done with this Chris, you should be very proud fella :)

Have a great day everyone, really wish I could be there with you guy's :(

Ray :)

Razor - It's a great shame you can't be there but I know if you could be you would. Maybe in 2012 we could have one somewhere near Manchester and in Scotland in 2013!

Yes the photo / video comments very much still stand. Everyone should have the right to their privacy and not have to worry about having their pictures posted on an open forum.

I also think it's a shame more people haven't signed up but maybe more will turn up on the day. I have invited a few curry-loving friends and their families so there should be a good group of people. And the weather is still looking okay despite hideous rain today!

Chris's comments are well meant, and I do not seek to disagree with him, but I do need to point out that British law is clear on this point :

Quote from: Metropolitan Police
Freedom to photograph/film

Members of the public and the media do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places and police have no power to stop them filming or photographing incidents or police personnel. [1]
Thus even if all members of CR0 heed Chris's request (as I am sure that they will), there is nothing in law to stop any member of the public taking photographs of our gathering.  There may, as a consequence of the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights into domestic law through the Human Rights Act 1998, be restrictions on the publication of such photographs. [2]

In other words, there is no difference between attending the curry-fest and walking down your local high street; in both situations, someone may legally and legitimately take your photograph -- what they may do with it subsequently is another matter entirely.

Phil - you have me a bit concerned, again. I thought anyone with decent manners would go along with a request at a private gathering not to take photos or video. It now sounds as though you're pointing out that, legally, there's nothing to stop anyone and you're right of course. If I go to a private event with (known) friends, any photos and video is unlikely to find its way on to somewhere like youtube or a forum like this, with a tag somethng like "that's Phil on the right and George on the left." Out gathering is different in that there are numerous reasons why loads of photos of curries and things might be of interest.

I intended buying ingredients today, cooking tomorrow and turning up on Saturday. Only the rain has meant I'm behind with buying the food stuffs. Now I'm wondering whether I should drop the whole idea. I've attended gatherings of two other forums before. It was very pleasant and nobody took photos. The other aspect, of course, is that by making an issue of this, I've set myself up for someone to take and post a photo, just as a sort of spiteful challenge. If I don't show up, you'll know the reason why.

I'm sorry, I intended to do exactly the opposite : to reassure you that, by attending the curry-fest, you are no more likely to end up on Flicker or Picasaweb than if you just pop out to the shops.  You know that we won't take your photograph, because you have asked us not to, and the chances of some complete stranger coming up and taking one are no greater than in (say) Morden High Street.  Come along and enjoy yourself, George : you will be just one of the great CR0 crowd, and no-one will single you out for special attention.

Good news, I saw my mate Az at lunch and he is definitely coming at around 12pm ish. He is going to bring a few bits and pieces for us to sample too. Incidentally, he sells the big 2.2kg tubs of Pataks pastes in his wholesale warehouse for ?7.99 - they are ?13.95 at Spices of India. I bought one of each of the main 3 and he threw in a jar of Naga Chilli Pickle to try, apparently it will blow your head off. I'll bring it on Saturday and see if the claims are true!

I hope it goes great for all of you. I would love to come but it's too far from Liverpool and I'm on a plane tomorrow to Gran Canaria. Maybe if a northern one was organised next summer us northerners could go.

It is a great opportunity to sample each other's food. I'm sure some of you guys are cooking much better curries than me, or so it feels.

George, how about just a photo of the back of your head?  ;)
Only joking - I do hope you get to it and enjoy yourself.

Good question Solar. He certainly wouldn't turn down the business and he can take card payment over the phone. The warehouse is over at Watchmoor Park (between the Meadows and the big Sainsburys). I was like a pig in sh*t walking round there :)

The company is called Caterpac and the email address is caterpacuk@googlemail.com. I suggest if you want to place an order, drop them an email with what you want and they should be able to get back to you with a price including delivery. Just make is FAO Aziz and mention my name.

While I was there a big order came in from the Golden Triangle. They were ordering 10 sacks of Basmati Rice and 15 of the big drums of Veg oil amongst a lot of other stuff. Az works there most days and then runs the takeaway all night - he works damn hard!

~Just catching up with this thread and just wanted to say I'll definately be there.

Now - I view this as exactly what Chris originally proposed - a laid back chance to meet people and socialise in a pleasant setting & discuss a common interest.  Not a cooking competition nor a food bartering session.  So... I will bring along enough to feed myself but it won't be curry, it'll be something for the BBQ - probably burgers.

As a novice, not at all talented aspiring curry chef I certainly don't feel able to cook for others and have no interest in competitive cookery.  I also don't buy into the need to trade gifts for food.  If someone wants to offer me the chance to sample their cooking I'd hope they would do so out of generosity and pride, not expecting to receive some quid pro quo in return.  And if no-one wants to do so it's certainly no skin off my nose - I'm there to meet people!  Having said that, from where I sit I do spy several large bottles of coke I can bring along in case that helps anyone.

George - I think you posted elsewhere that you were nervous of attending because you'd had cross words with some of the attendees (sorry if I'm incorrectly paraphrasing).  For what it's worth, if you attend I'll be happy to chat with you amicably and will give you the apology I feel is due for some of the things I've posted.  I can explain to you the whys and wherefores if you like, or avoid the subject if you prefer.  In any case please don't miss the chance to attend on my account (and I hope I'm not being presumptious by even suggesting that).  Forum is one thing, real life is quite another  ;)

I think we can all guarantee that it will be a fun day!! No competition about cooking, no cross words or affrontation, just meeting people and getting to know one another, which I think will benefit this website immensly....

Chis, If I make some Chicken Tikka tomorrow for my dish which I'll bring along for people to try, will there be the opportunity to grill it at the BBQ and just add it to the ready made curry, or do I need to complete the whole dish here?
Title: Re: CR0 BBQ This Saturday!

Absolutely! Im planning on taking some marinated uncooked meats to stick on the BBQ. I'll take my BIG skewers so no need to worry about bringing any. I'm also going to take a couple of sauces in aluminium foil trays to heat up on the BBQ.

I've also ordered lots of pitta breads and tortilla wraps to stuff with meat to eat, plus I'll have the naga chilli pickle to spice them up. I have plastic plates and cups too so you guys don't need to worry too much about those.

Natterjak - you are right, this is supposed to be a social event not a competitive one. We'll save that for the CR0 Cook Off in December  ;)

Nice to see enthusiasm :)

FYI will be bringing around 5 or six portions of my Saag Aloo - hope people like it? - if not, then there is more for me to scoff :). Plus a double portion of Razors Seekh Kebabs (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=4393.0) raw to be cooked on the BBQ, so hopefully enough for several people to have some.

We also planning to make 2 portions of curry sauce, 1 x garlic chilli and 1 x vindaloo. Was hoping Aziz may be prepared to taste some and offer his opinions / advice.

Cheers

Good work Solar and I'm sure he will be willing to taste and advise (even though it is Ramadan!)

I'm going to take some of my massala sauce too for people to try.

OK, modulo a disaster I hope very much to attend tomorrow -- I have prepared an egg Madras (a dozen eggs, cut in halves), the remains of a catering-size Patak's Mixed Pickle (should be enough for tomorrow), three packs of Elephant Atta Chapati, a dozen low-alcohol beer (Clausthaler Extra Herb), possibly some high-alcohol Belgian beers if my wife can remember where they are (!), and perhaps an assortment of spices so that people can experiment with adjusting the spicing of things on the fly if they wish.

Could someone please remind me of the arrangements for exactly where we are to meet ?  And do we have a mobile contact number for Chris WG just in case we get lost ?

Here is the link which includes directions. If you look at the park map you will see Car Park 3 on the right hand side and some BBQ icons. We have booked BBQ number 4 in the corner.

Getting there is pretty easy, from the M3 J4 follow signs for Frimley, then Frimley Green. When you get to the 'Green' in Frimley Green you go right at the roundabout, past the Rose and Thistle, the road ducks under a railway line than the entrance to the park is on your left hand side. Or, put GU16 6HY into the sat-nav if you have one.

2 hours cooking = large container or massala sauce, large container of roshney sauce, 12 bhajis, and about 15 large pieces of chicken marinading. Add the sausages, burgers, wraps and pittas and we should have enough food!

Yep! Ok jealous. But hope you all have a real ball men. Must admit wish I was going now especially as I have just finished knocking up a large batch of madras sauce - would have been ideal for your tikka and other kebabs. Oh well bung it in the freezer. Might just have to have an event down here in the sticks next year.

Bon time

Quote from: BBC News
M25 Surrey, clockwise between M23 [M25 junction 7] and A217 [M25 junction 8]
M25 Surrey - M25 closed clockwise between J7 M23 and J8, A217 (Reigate), because of a shed load, a serious accident involving a lorry and a car and an oil spillage. Diversion in operation - clockwise via the hollow triangle symbol (northbound M23 and A23 to Purley Cross, westbound A2022 to Banstead, southbound A217 to J8).

Very Severe

I will need to re-check this before setting off tomorrow; this is an integral part of my route, and the suggested detour involves a very considerable diversion.

Sincere apologies to all -- as the M25 incident is currently unresolved (junctions 7 to 8 are still closed, with re-opening not expected until mid-day), I think it is better to cancel my plans to come to the curry-fest.  I hope those that can make it have a great day, and that there will be another occasion for a similar get-together, perhaps next year.

My wife drove through there at about 5pm last night. She came off the motorway at J6 and back on at J8. It only added on about 30 mins and that was at Friday rush hour. I doubt there will be too much traffic there this morning.

Well just thought I'd post up some bad news about the event today......

I'm still coming!  ;D

On the food front I've noticed a lot of you seem to be catering for about 10 and I suspect we are going to end up with more food than we can eat but ill still bring along some burgers as there might be quite a queue for the gas rings so running the BBQ in parallel might help.

More good news - Az just texted to say he has some special spiced chicken marinading along with some Az-style bhajis and burgers.

Just wondering whether it's sensible bringing burgers or if they will go uneaten with the far more tempting fare on offer. But then I dont want to turn up empty handed and proceed to scoff the food of others!

I've got 3 big bottles of chilled coke and some naan which I'll bring regardless

Just back from this cracking event - thanks so much to Chris for organising it and to Chris, Solarspace, 976Bar & Az for being so generous in sharing their food.

Az was quizzed mercilessly on his methods and I was interested to learn he subscribes to the school of thought that says it's best to burn the spices a little when you fry them.  Going to try that next time I cook.  I sampled Chris's Roshney chicken, 976Bar and Solarspace's garlic chilli chicken, various chicken tikka including Az's marinaded chicken and of course the bhajis and 976Bar's tikka massala.  Not forgetting Solar's "razor kebab lamb".  All completely gorgeous and I couldn't place any above any other.  Oh, and Solarspace's vindaloo and sag aloo which were both spot on.

A couple of pics of the happy proceedings today - forgot to take a snap of Solar's gas hob in action but at most times there were a couple of different curries bubbling away!

Just got back from the BBQ and I would like to thank Chris for organising :)

A great time was had by all and the rain managed to stay off which was nice. Some fantastic food was produced by everyone and there was enough to feed an army. I think some of us will be eating curry at home for a few days with what we bought back.

I hope with the next one we get more people along as it really was a great day. Looking forward to the next one :)

Sorry, chaps, I didn't make it (as you may have noticed).  The puncture didn't cause a serious delay -- it was just a leaking valve seat -- but the M.25 was appalling.  The queue back from the J6 exit was about three miles, so I decided to chance my arm and carry on to J7.  There I sat, crawling forward at a fractional mile per hour, for about an hour and a half.  When I finally reached J7, I had two choices (North or South); North was stationary, South was flowing freely.  But by the time I reached the Gatwick exit the rain was already falling, and I decided enough was enough.  I carried on to the next exit, then turned off to East Grinstead, and made my way home via our former window cleaner's home in Tunbridge Wells, who likes curry and who I thought might appreciate some of the egg Madras (I was right : he did appreciate it).  Thence home, and just got in now, at about 16:30.

I'm truly sorry not to have made it, but I did my best; the traffic jam on the M.25 was just too much.

** Phil.

Hi Everyone

I appreciate this subject has limited interest for the non-participants, so - will try to keep things brief...

Thank you ChrisWG for organising & sponsoring the event. You found a great location, that is perfect for families and days out at any time.

Good to meet you Az, natterjak & 976bar :)

ChrisWG - Your Bhaji's and tikka looked great - never got the chance to try any though :(

Az - Your 'death' chicken as ChrisWG put it was superb - and not 'death' chicken at all  :P

976bar - Your version of Blades tikka was absolutely superb. Probably the best tikka I have ever had from anywhere. Also really liked your CTM and garlic chilli sauce too. Thank you!

I brought some portions of my own Saag Aloo (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=5424.0), which went down very well according to feedback.

Also a good portion of Razors Seekh Kebabs (http://www.curry-recipes.co.uk/curry/index.php?topic=4393.0) to be cooked on the BBQ. I make these into burgers because they always fall off the skewers for me - but very very popular! - thanks Razor!

Also some of my own garlic chilli & vindaloo sauces. Which people seemed to like. Although it turns out that my vindaloo is actually a spot on madras rather than a vindaloo in other peoples opinions  :'(

Was also lucky enough to be able to meet Az owner of Chutneys TA - Fleet Hampshire (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/155722-Chutneys-Indian-Fleet)

Az is a thoroughly great chap and was more than helpful offering advice and sampling our offerings. Thank you Az - I hope we did not pester you too much. Here are some of the snippets of his advice:

Pans, Az chooses the lightest ali pans possible, this is down to basically every chef he knows getting wrist joint / rsi type problems from handing pans in one hand all night for 20 years. This is also because of the need for speed - he chooses a pan with a very thin base - thicker is not better in his trade, takes too long to heat up and is too heavy.

Az tends to never add g&g paste during the fry as it is already incorporated into his base sauce.

The spices must be fried far longer than most people would think. Az suggests that they should be reaching the point of 'charring'.

Az - Vindaloo - No vinegar, no lemon. Nothing. Just lots of chilli powder. In fact probably a generous 1/2 chef spoon of chilli powder. It is all in the frying of the chilli powder technique.

He personally avoids Rajah spices due to excessive cost. Favouring TRS & East End as equally high quality but better value for money.

He prefers using veg ghee to start dishes.

That is about all I can remember..

Anyway, goes to show, that there were no issues - as expected, no violations of privacy or confrontation - just a civilised and very enjoyable afternoon. Hopefully we can do this again with more members attending next time :)

Thanks everyone.

Hi SP,

Great post as ever mate.  Some great observations too courtesy of Az.  It has been mentioned before about not starting the dish off with GG paste but I always assumed that, that technique would apply ONLY when using a base sauce heavily laden with garlic and ginger?

There was another post more recently where someone had it suggested to him (I think by a BIR chef) to 'singe' the spices?  Which to me, describes perfectly what Az is suggesting.

I am a little concerned that you are struggling with my kebabs SP, so I'm going to pm you with a few questions, and see if we can bottom this one out ;D

The question of pans has cropped up many times, and, straight from the horses mouth (Az), the light Ali ones are best.  I use the very same one that you see in Chewy's videos.  Very cheap, very durable and very good.

So SP, who was who in photo then lol.

Good post mate,

Ray :)

Hi All
Looks like you all had a great time currying,  ;D
I bet the aroma caused some interest to the onlookers.
I'd love to do something similar, maybe next time.

Just shows how every BIR/TA do it there way. No G&G in the tarka
No Vinegar in the Vindaloo. Veg ghee instead of oil.

No hard and fast rules in the curry game. ;)
cheers Chewy

Obviously SS you quizzed Az at length  ;D ;D.  Good man yourself.  How else are we going to get those pearls of wisdom.  And as CT said, funny how they all have their own way of doing things.  How diverse can this curry cooking lark get???   Ray, will be trying your sheek kebabs at some point.  I'll let you know if i have any probs keeping them on the skewers :-\ and will be looking for some advice if i do :o.  It sounds like all those who went had a fab time.  I bet the onlookers were drewling over the aroma emanating from the CRO pitch.  Good ;D ;D ;D.  I look forward to the next event which i will endeavour to attend.  Well done to all the participants 8)

Nice post Solar.  :D

Crikey, I think it raises more questions than it answers. Nowadays I do tend to fry my spices longer than I used to, but I question whether that is long enough. I suppose it would be quite easy to test this - if you take it too far then you can just start again. Must admit, I've never quite understood the 'toffee' smell that many go on about.

Great post Solarspace, I'm glad you enjoyed the dishes :)

And in my opinion, I thought you're Vindaloo was spot on for taste if lacking a little in heat for a Vindaloo, but great effort.

The link you sent me for Razor's Seekh Kebab's won't open for some reason, so I'm just going to go to the Kebab's section and look for razor's recipe, but thanls for sending it in the first place :)

Looking forward to the next event, I might bring my burner next time to and maybe we could have a go at preparing dishes from scratch. I think I have most of the spices and could bring some base sauce along. If anyone cares to bring their meat/chicken/fish or whatever and their recipe we could get a few demo's going :)

For those that met Az, send me an IM and I'll send you his mobile number if you want to buy any bulk ingredients from his warehouse.

Also, if you order a takeaway from Chutneys on a Monday or a Tuesday I'm sure he'd be more than happy to let you watch him cook it in the kitchen (assuming he is there).

Regarding next time, I think I heard that you can hire the Harlington Centre in Fleet by the hour including their kitchen. I'm not sure if they'd be 100% happy about having 30 people cooking curries in there but I'm sure if we left it in good condition they wouldn't mind. This would mean we could hold a Winter event without worrying about the weather and we would have plenty of gas rings to cook on. We could have a curry cook off competition for those wanting to cook.

Hi Chris,

That sounds like an excellent idea, maybe towards Xmas :)

I'd like AZ's number if possible please :)

Az - Vindaloo - No vinegar, no lemon. Nothing. Just lots of chilli powder. In fact probably a generous 1/2 chef spoon of chilli powder. It is all in the frying of the chilli powder technique.

At last. A chef who knows how to cook a proper Vindaloo!  ;D

Good to meet you Az, natterjak & 976bar :)
;)

Also some of my own garlic chilli & vindaloo sauces. Which people seemed to like. Although it turns out that my vindaloo is actually a spot on madras rather than a vindaloo in other peoples opinions  :'(

If it's any help, I thought your vindaloo was somewhere between a madras and vindaloo in heat and in flavour was great.  Whether a vindaloo should have lemon added - I'll leave that to others!

He personally avoids Rajah spices due to excessive cost. Favouring TRS & East End as equally high quality but better value for money.

To expand on this I think Az mentioned that it was also due to Rajah not selling in large catering sized packs.

Anyway, goes to show, that there were no issues - as expected, no violations of privacy or confrontation - just a civilised and very enjoyable afternoon. Hopefully we can do this again with more members attending next time :)

Everyone was good as gold.  Didn't expect anything else of course but yourself, Chris, 976Bar, Az and all the various wives, partners, friends and kids were great company and I'm very happy I made the effort to attend.  The only mystery was why the takeup wasn't greater.
