Hello pdtnc (pretty damn tasty northern curries?)

I was recently thinking about growing a few chillies. Are there any that are easier to grow than others? My only effort in the past grew great chillis on the window sill but they then got infested with whitefly.

Hiya..
Cheers for the welcomes :)

This is our current grow list, all have sprouted in the propagator and we've just potted up six varieties which will sit under the grow-light for a few weeks. :)

pdtnc = http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/ (http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/) ;) Though your version sounds pretty good.
Cayenne is a good starter chilli, very useful in cooking, great to pickle, dries well so you can grind up your own powder.
Santa Fe Grande is nice and easy, lovely gratered with Cheese on toast.
Rocoto's have a kick and are juicy, pickle well, makes quite a big pod, stands a bit of colder climate better.

Kill all bugs as soon as you notice them, get something that sound like it would be bad for you if you drank it, none of that organic stuff that just annoys the bugs for a bit!  :o

Hope that helps :)

No Dorset Naga's yet then?

If I get whitefly or other bugs on my young chilli plants, I spray then with a solution of 2 to 3 habenero chillies blended with a little water (strained). It burns the crap out of em and doesn't harm the plant's sensitive leaves.

No Nagas, not yet, maybe next year...

Seems a waste of Habs on flies, does that really work?
How about Spider Mites?

Each year I always have a massive surplus of chillies (end up giving them away) so using 3 habeneros is nothing compared to losing a whole greenhouse full of chilli plants. You can also use really hot chilli powder mixed with water.

Yes it really does work (also add a couple of drops of washing up liquid into the solution). Most commercial insecticides will damage young chilli plants, which is why I use this method.

Not sure about spider mites but I can't see why not.

If you want any Dorset Naga seeds drop me a personal e-mail.

Hi pdtnc,

I am an enthusiastic chilli grower too,I have got a big collection of chilli varieties (and serious problems to avoid cross-pollination), moreover in my small terrace I grow a lot of curry related plants, curry leaf tree, lemongrass, several kinds of basils, coriander... i am even growing fenugreek between the orchards, which are the only non-edible plants i got (i am still wondering how they ended there and how they have avoided been pulled up in order to get more living space  :)). Last week I sowed cayennes, orange habaneros, serranos and jalape?os and I have currently growing caribbean red habaneros and thai chillies to use in my curries (which are getting better really fast since i found this amazing site)

Regards
