We discuss lots about how much we enjoy eating a good curry, but how much do you enjoy cooking it?
Here's my scenario -
Put on some great music. :)
Open a nice bottle of wine. :D
Start prepping veg. Have a bit of wine.
Prepare spices and quantities. Prepare rice. More wine. ;D
Have a bit of a jig, with maybe some air guitar thrown in for good measure.
Start cooking, with a bit of wine, as I start to imitate an Indian chef!
Complete cooking meal, so reward myself with a bit of wine! :o
I really enjoy doin it all, to me it's all part of the curry process.
What's your curry cooking MO?
-
I am fine as long as I am left alone to do it. Sometimes involves vino tinto or a glass of hop based liquid depending on whether I am cooking in advance. Apron on is a must. Turmeric is a bugger.m ;) yes. I enjoy it. ;D

What's your curry cooking MO?
0) No music (this is normal, not just for cooking curries)
1) Decide between rice and paratha; if rice, start washing
2) Get down jars of spices : Curry Powder, Kashmiri and/or Deggi Mirch, Cumin, Fenugreek, Coriander, Chat Masala, ...
3) Top oven on to 80oC, plate in.
4) Dilute tomato puree
5) Rice washed, drained, dried, spiced, into microwave for final 12 minutes plus resting time.
6) Fan on, over-hob lights on
7) Base sauce to warm
8] Wok on, plenty of oil
9) Garlic and ginger in, cook, add diluted tomato puree
10) Spices in
11) If chicken raw, in now, otherwise after first ladle of base
12) One ladle of base
13) See above
14) More base
15) Rest of base
16) "Cook until the oil comes out"
17) If paratha, add ghee to clean pan and cook
18) Serve
19) Eat
20) Enjoy.
** Phil.
P.S. No apron (ever); occasional swigs of cloudy lemondade (Waitrose, fully leaded) or Rubicon (Mango, Lichee, Guava).
-
Is that all Phil?
Just what I have come to expect from you. Detail.
Final 12 mins on the rice though? You mean final 20 mins on warm? ;D
....... And in my case (supposedly )
No 21. Put on Troll suit and post provocative and taunting comments to be totally misconstrued by menopausal individual(s). Ah! Pass me an after dinner kulfi with sugar coated fennel. :-\

Ah! Pass me an after dinner kulfi with sugar coated fennel. :-\
WHERE DO YOU GET THE SUGAR COATED FENNEL SEEDS : I WOULD KILL FOR THEM IF NECESSARY !
(Used to get them in 500gm packs from Ashford Gurkhas, but no signs for over a year -- I am getting desperate).
Rice timing : yes, probably !

Got some in the cupboard. ;) i think originally I got them from Dadus in Tooting. Happy to try and get you some albeit I am not working now ( near there ) but can try.

Dadus Tooting was the last time I got them. Some in jar in cupboard now. Want me to try and get some albeit I am not working near there now so a trip would be necessary. Also have another possible place in mind. Will find out and let you know.

Yes, that's where I bought them from last time, Bamble :

but they and I fell out over a tawa that they supplied with the rivets through the base (!) so I wasn't keen to deal with them again. But needs must, when the Devil drives, I suppose.

Phil. Spices of India have them as well.

For me, cooking is the enjoyment and eating is the reward. I know that sounds cliche, but that is how it is for me.
Whilst on a simple dinner a casual beer or glass of wine is very enjoyable, I find otherwise, it is very confuzzling!
Cheers
Malc :)

Cooking is the fun part these days (to me, anyway!) I like the idea of trying to find "that taste" which Julian failed to describe and share in his book. I like the creativity, the steep learning curve, the mistakes, the post-cooking/post-meal analysis of events and planning of what's to do in my next attempt. I guess the whole lifecycle of cooking a curry is what drives me to keep on keeping on!
Phil, I would be happy to extend the offer to ship you a few packages, though I'm in Ireland and I'm sure you would be able to find these locally within better time frames and keeping the overall price down.
-
Gagomes, RubyDoo, thank you both for your kind offer. I will endeavour to get some online and if that fails I will get back to you.

If you have a Morrisons nearby they also stock them in their foods of the world section Phil. Noticed them the other day when i was in there.

Oohhh, that /is/ useful information. Not my favourite supermarket by a long chalk, but not too far away, can conveniently be fitted in with a trip to Screwfix, and if they have SCFS I shall be there like a shot ! Many thanks, CH : much appreciated.

With an empty house (rare), pint of ale and some music (common) I enjoy the process of getting the spices all out, reading the recipe, planning it, cooking it. Less enjoy trying to ensure I quickly clean anything the turmeric can stain and clearing up all the splashes everywhere!
-
Have been cooking two curries, five nights a week for the past two years now - I love it. Music is a must.

Dettox "Mould and Mildew". Nothing better for eliminating turmeric stains from clothes, tableclothes, working surfaces, cutting boards, etc.

Just to be sure, did you mean Dettol rather than Dettox (which is also a brand of liquid soap) ?

Just to be sure, did you mean Dettol rather than Dettox (which is also a brand of liquid soap) ?
It is made by Dettol (the pine oil disinfectant company) but was branded as Dettox. It may have been re-branded as Dettol since I last bought some, in the same way that Oil of Ulay (no, /don't/ try making curries with it !) was re-branded as Oil of Olay ("international consistency" : if a product name is already copyrighted in a country in which the brand is trying to launch, or if it means something unpleasant in the language of that country, then an international re-branding exercise may have to take place).
Description
Formerly known as Dettox, Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover is ideal for removing mould from a variety of different surfaces. Suitable for use on chrome, stainless steel, glazed ceramic tiles, white grouting, formica and plastics, acrylic bath tubs and showers, ceramic baths and toilets.
Not suitable for use on...hot or damaged surfaces, coloured grouting, rubber, metals (except chrome and stainless steel) unglazed ceramic tiles, enamel, painted surfaces, painted / treated / varnished wood, laminate floors, textiles and carpets, linoleum.
Ignore the bit about "unsuitable for use on textiles" -- I have used it on white shirts (poly-cotton), tee-shirts (cotton), damask table cloths, tea cloths, light colour cotton slacks ... All have survived unharmed.

Thanks for clarifying!

If you have a Morrisons nearby they also stock them in their foods of the world section Phil. Noticed them the other day when i was in there.
Couldn't find any, CH, and two very helpful staff members were unaware of any "Foods of the World" section. I looked in the obvious places, the most likely being adjacent to the Bombay Mix, Balti Mix and so on, but no signs.

Sorry to hear that Phil. I found them in with the Pataks pastes, spices and gram flour. Obviously not all stores stock the same items. Good luck in your search
