Making Poppadoms?
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:06 PM »
Given our countries propensity for inclement (i.e. crap ::)) weather is it a realistic proposition to attempt to make poppadoms (or pappadums if you prefer) ?

Has anyone here tried?  This video shows a lady making them using pappad flour and a trampoline, sun-drying them outside...

Urad Papad or Poppadoms - Start to finish

I've got the trampoline but you can see my dilemma, no sun in "bonny" Scotland for 364 days of the year ;D

I don't know which wavelengths of the sun's energy are most important for the drying of papads, but it seems to me that so long as you are not planning on making too many at a time, it might be possible to rig up an overhead gantry with a bank of high-output lamps (or ceramic heat emitters) of appropriate wavelength.  It is obviously possible to dry papads using other than the sun's heat, as this commercial quotation explains :

Quote
Dryer for papad

An electric drier would be use to dry the papad. The dryer casing would be reinforcing by means of m. S. Sections to make it sturdy. Temperature dial meters would be provide at different places in the oven. Above 15 to 16 kg/hour pant, we will supply lamenter type along with the sheeter and extruder process will be omits. Drier can also supply with diesel faired or liquefied petroleum gas instead of electric fired system for reducing daring cost.

Thanks for posting the vid SP.  Very interesting and more than enough for me to continue to pick up a pack when i need them ;D.  That is just one step too far  :o :o :o

Read your original thread MV.  I thought then "now that will be a true labour of love"  ;).  How did they turn out?
Are home made ones really worth all that effort  ???  I'll pass unless someone can convince me otherwise  ;D

Interesting indeed, I think thing that stood out mostly for me was that the papads were not fried, rather toasted over a hot plate

Would love to read your follow up Martin, I wonder if the pounding, stretching and folding could be made easier with the use of a pasta machine, any thoughts on this?

As for drying, in the oven on the lowest heat with the door slightly ajar if needed, might be an option?

Oops, note to self... use search next time... sorry

How did yours turn out Martin?   I found another recipe (sans video this time) at http://www.curryfrenzy.com/curry/html/how-to-make-poppadoms.html which doesn't even dry them before frying....

Oven on a low heat is a good idea, thank you Axe
