looks like a crock of shit to be honest.

no mention of a base which 99% of bir use, so how can this be right?

nothing about pre-cooking chicken

no tomato in the vindallo or chilli!!!! except cayenne

this all looks so traditional and once again not what we are looking for.

hello to all

i got a fresh order of spices and things from my reg online supplier, and as im sure we all do i got some new stuff to give it a whirl.

one item was from a company called top op

100g of ginger whole, blanched. seemed like worth a try to me as i often dont have any fresh ginger and seemed a better alternative than powder.

trouble is i cant cut the stuff, it seems to have been blanched with skin on, so i cant even grate it. i then tried soaking in water for a while, still couldnt cut it.

is there some kinda secret to make this stuff useable and is it a decent fresh alternative.

or should i get a catapult and use on the neighbours cat.

thats some amount of curry leaf from one tree, must be pretty profitable for the growers considering what is charged for a little pack.

well the wholesaler/retailer realy, the growers probably get very little.

wish i had the space for one of those as would take you up on your kind offer.

as an experiment, i planted 8 birds eye chilli seeds straight from the chilli (bought from tesco origin kenya) they took about a month to germinate and are growing like wildfire I should be potting them into larger pots in a couple of weeks or so - why buy seeds when you already have them on hand :)

Kev.

well you can get a lot of intresting kinds, there are 100s of kinds and thats where the intrest for me lies. Also seeds taken from supermarket chillies often have cross polination problems where as the seeds bought are from plants growing in isolation to prevent this. Still if you just want to have a bash at growing some common chillies then its a cheap an easy way that you did.

its realy done for the same way tomato gardeners dont just go use supermarket tomatoes, just cant get the flavours.

i cant wait till i have a habanero to put in my curry and next season im going to have a crack at the worlds hottest chillies.

ok an update

planted 9 of the mixed habanero/ scotch bonnet seeds. 7 have sprouted so far. I still doubt especially with these kind that i will get anything this year, so just realy looking to salvage for overwintering, if i get half to do this will be happy.

my 2 chilli plants i started in march are jalapenos, they are about 1.3 foot and 1 foot now, so a while to go but in plenty of time to flower and get some peppers.

toms are doing ok too, marmande variety, just worried a cane that i have in each pot wont be enough to support them when they fruit, so looking at buying 2 expensive cages for them.

i think by looking at other pics from the web my chillies are a bit leggy, i guess this is to be expected realy with the dull spring we have had here so far, weather seems ready to improve though.

best to leave it as it is, some people may not feel they have much to say or contribute. for a newbie these forums can often be intimidating.

i notice a lot of people say hi then slink back into the background.

ah well better get off to work.

which makes me think if they can learn to make italian, turkish, american dishes then why cant we learn to make curries.

id love to see a typical brit with a fish and chip shop start selling vindaloo and nans.

hi peterandjan

ive put the seeds in compost and into the airing cupboard, the heat off the boiler should help them along nicely.

i was wondering if its worth puting my 2 small chilli plants in there too overnight, and then on the windowsill again during the day?

must be 30 degrees in there constantly with the heat off the watertank.

dont know if this would do any good though?
