Hi Bobby

Is that lumps of leaf (methi or curry) floating on the surface of the powder .. or is it bits fallen in from the foil seal when you opened it?

I think he said the plastic ones Chris

Yep .. I did say plastic. Plastic is best.

However ......
I've actually been reheating takeaways in (ALUMINIUM) foil dishes in the microwave for years ... without arching or sparking.  :o

All my chinese takeaways go straight into the microwave as soon as I get home and the food zapped before I even open the lids (not the Chilli beef though).
This astounds many people, but try it. It is usually okay.  ::)

The outside of the foil dish must be clean and dry otherwise it will spark.

I think arching/sparking is caused by impurities on or within the aluminium foil.

Nevertheless over 95% of containers I've zapped have been okay. If it does cause arching simply remove it.

To freeze the gravy, I use all those old plastic takeaway dishes. Perfect size for 2 curries as they will hold 400 ml (2 x 200 ml gravy) .... and of course they're easy to stack in the freezer.

Hi Jethro

We live just North of Lincoln, about 10 miles from Market Rasen (epicentre) and had just gone to bed (12.45) when the house starting shaking just before 1.00.

Our house is below the approach path to RAF Waddington and we get those large Nimrod things with spinning roof racks landing daily.

My first thoughts were that one of these aircraft had crashed, but it only took seconds to realise that the noise (loud rumble) and vibration was from an earth tremor (can't really call it a quake - not at 5.2 on Richter scale).

My parrot fell off his cage and flew into the kitchen sink, breaking my favourite crystal wine glass, and the dog starting shaking with fear in-sync with the vibrating ornaments, windows and brickwork.

As it was all over in 10 seconds, we both jumped straight back into bed (king size waterbed) and took full advantage of the mini tsunami's.

Glad I didn't miss it though, really weird experience.

Well the base is complete and after a quick taste test nothing new really to report. Very nice consistency, but not huge hit of flavour which of course there isn't supposed to be in this recipe. If I get a chance today I will use to to make a jalfrezi and give an update then, For the time being I'm looking for empty water bottles so I can start freezing  ;D

Hi VMix

You are of course 100% correct about the taste. It is meant to be rather bland and not dominated by spices. This provides the versatility to use with many different curries. If of course you are looking to make a base to use specifically with one type of curry then there are some better bases (Darth's for Madras for example).

Just wondered, did the oil separate during stage 2 as shown in the photos. I assume your last photo was just after blending and before oil separation?

How many days old are these George?

Did you plant the seeds directly into the compost or get them to sprout first. Only reason I ask is that I've just started some today (on wet tissue) and I was wondering whether to plant them tomorrow or leave them to shoot first.

Especially dedicated to all you ambitious Fenugreek growers (as well as users), I think this may be worthy of a post.  ::)

Not just a spice - Fenugreek is a powerful drug and has a very long history of medicinal use (as well as others).

Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of the polysaccharide galactomannan. They are also a source of saponins such as diosgenin, yamogenin, gitogenin, tigogenin, and neotigogens. Other bioactive constituents of fenugreek include mucilage, volatile oils, and alkaloids such as choline and trigonelline.

Use with caution

Fenugreek is in the same family as peanuts and chickpeas, and may cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals.

Fenugreek reduces blood glucose levels, and in the few studies using it as a hypoglycemic, also reduces blood cholesterol. If you're diabetic (IDDM), use fenugreek only if you have good control of your blood glucose levels.

Mothers with hypoglycemia should also use fenugreek with caution.

Fenugreek is often cited as a natural remedy for asthma. However, inhalation of the powder can cause asthma and allergic symptoms. Some have reported that it worsened their asthma symptoms.

Fenugreek is considered to be an emmenagogue (promotes menstrual flow). Use fenugreek with caution if you have a history of abnormal menstrual cycles.

Fenugreek is often cited as a natural remedy for migraines. However, it may trigger a migraine and/or contribute to the duration and severity of a migraine.

Fenugreek is commonly reported to lower blood pressure and LDL blood cholesterol levels. However, it may cause or contribute to hypertension (high blood pressure)? Some recommend avoiding this herb if you have a history of hypertension, or if there is a strong family history of hypertension or heart disease.

Other Side Effects

Side effects of fenugreek include diarrhea and gas or flatulence, which usually subside after a few days of use (so does Vindaloo!).

Women of childbearing age should be cautioned that fenugreek may cause uterine contractions and thus cause problems with pregnancy. Pregnant women should not take fenugreek for this reason. Also, allergic reactions have been reported, including runny nose, wheezing and facial swelling.

........ and not a lot of people knew that!

Final warning: Please discontinue use if patient experiences any unusual symptoms ... such as death!

OK I'm going with the Saffron Base Gravy for starters and depending on the state of my current illness (man flu) I will hope to get the first batch on the go tomorrow. Lots of reading to get through that entire Saffron thread now.....

Hi vmixture

Welcome to the best curry forum.

Good luck with the base. Make sure you use the newer illustrated version.
