Great idea!!

Tesco Healthy Living plain mini naans - They only have 1 g fat in them instead of the usual 10-12 in a larger one.  May take 3 of the smaller ones to equal size of larger one ( so 3g fat or so)  but they are so soft and yummier than any other brand so far I tried!!  Hard to believe they are healthy.

Not to be a spoilsport or anything again, in the US they say that the ginger skin is full of pesticides and chemicals that can be removed only by peeling!  But I have read in many places (not in the US) that the skin has a lot of flavor and should be kept on.  I know, I am the person who is always posting bad things about your ingredients but just sharing what I have learned!  Sorry!

November 17, 2005, 04:37 PM
I just bought the muslim today from Dunhelm Mills fabric department and it is called "white muslin" and sells for 3 pounds a meter.  the smallest amount I could get was half a meter.  so only 1.50!  Not bad and a massive piece too!!

Traditional Indian Recipes / Chilly Paneer
November 07, 2005, 01:06 PM
Here is a recipe I came up by combining a few recipes I have seen.  This is an appetizer I have seen offered here in the UK at indian restaurants.  It is a kind of indian/chinese fusion recipe.  I just tried it for lunch today and it came out really good!!  Again, I didnt measure anything but can give a rough idea of what I did.

small paneer cubes
small piece of ginger, grated
1-2 cloves ginger, grated
1 onion, sliced into thin half rings
2 TBSP plain flour
1 TBSP cornflour
black pepper to taste
salt to taste
1 tsp white vinegar
2 tsp. soy sauce or more to taste
2 TBSP chili sauce (I use the Maggi brand one - it is more sweet and sour)
oil to deep fry

- first, make a batter with the flour and cornflour.  Make it pretty thin and add salt and pepper to taste.
- add paneer pieces to it - make sure they get coated a bit with the batter.
- deep fry the paneer cubes until lightly brown all over.  set aside to cool.
- heat 1-2 spoons oil in a pan and add onions.  Cook until soft and add garlic and ginger and cook for a minute.  Add soy sauce, chili sauce, vinegar and more black pepper.
- Cook until it is nice and bubbly - add few spoons and water and cook.  If needed, add some cornstarch in water to thicken it up.  Add the paneer cubes and mix and heat it through.

If you dont have chili sauce, I think you can take some chopped tomatoes (or tomato sauce/ketchup), red chilies, sugar and vinegar and cook it all down to get a sort of tangy chili sauce.  Should come out pretty close to it.  Also, you can add capsicum and carrot sliced very thin into match stick pieces with the onions.
I was surprised to see that even though the paneer did not have what seemed to be a thick coating of the batter, it still got a nice, chewy batter around it!!!  Just like in the restaurant!

About this oil reusing issue - isnt it the same at Mcdonalds or any other place that fries french fries or onion rings or burgers?  They reuse the oil again and again.  It is not regulated and cannot be - it would be too costly for restaurants to use fresh oil every time.

Madras / Re: Prawn Madras & Chicken Balti demo

That may be something to ask a BIR chef - if he uses MSG or not.  Thye might mix it with something or just call it salt.  I was surprised to see it in indian stores - bags of it!!

I did buy some asda brand stir fry rice and there was no mention of anything related to MSG!  I know the alternative names due to someone's posting here on this site.  I didnt know it had so many names to it - that was a great posting!  I suppose I will search the shelves of Asda and if something has a "hidden' name for MSG, I shall create a fuss.
