My intro curries was in the early 60s. Brilliant Indian run by an ex Gurkha in Altrincham called The Taj on Church St. Fantastic madras prawn or chicken. Not really tasted anyhting like the madras from there since. There was a good Indian on Princess St Manchester around same period called Taj Mahal. Madras in their was pretty hot. Vindaloo too much so. They also did a Phaal - but no one ever dared try it - the waiter would put you off ordering it. My mare Pete asked for a Phaal chicken once - ate it - I tasted it - too much for me. When he

Tandoori and Tikka / Re: Chewys Tandoori Lamb Chops

Looks great, Chewy! The recent posts of tandoori meats inspired me to go out and buy a load of chops. The marinade will be sorted later today!
PS: I also take your point in the other recent thread about 1970s-style food. Your photos above (and many other of your previous foodie photos) are illustrative of new ways to serve modern dishes using well-established recipes and techniques. Indian food doesn't just need to be about curry, rice and naan - although, nothing wrong with that either! When my stretch was still beans-on-toast, I was a big fan of Vesta Paella and Vesta Chow Mein with Crispy Noodles!
Vesta........absolute QUALITY

Perhaps because the message to which it was a response, suggesting that lessons on how to use the site functionality should be mandatory for new members, or words very much to that effect, has mysteriously disappeared ! It is unfortunate that the member who made that comment and Curryhell, who made a helpful reply, both have just over 3000 posts to their credit and thus my message could appear to refer to CH's post, which it most definitely did not.
** Phil.
I saw the message to which you refer, your response IMO was both eloquent and just.

Lets Talk Curry / 70's Curry
March 22, 2019, 08:32 PM
During the 70's going for a curry after a fruitless visit to a Disco was a common thing, something to soak up the lager we had already had, and help heal the dismay caused by the failing to "pull".
My memories of these were of them being superb, we usually only went to one curry house, and never seemed to veer from Popadoms, Chicken Tikka, Meat Madras, with two chapati's, pilau rice and an mushroom bhaji.
Now was it better or are my memories clouded by all the lager.

Talk About Anything Other Than Curry / Real Estate......Enjoy the read
March 22, 2019, 10:00 AMSubject: REAL ESTATE IN LOUISIANA -
This is a real hum-dinger. Enjoy'
Rebuilding New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina often caused residents
to be challenged to prove home titles back hundreds of years. That is
because of community history stretching back over two centuries during
which houses were passed along through generations of family,
sometimes making it quite difficult to establish a paper trail of
ownership.
A New Orleans lawyer sought a FHA rebuilding loan for a client.
He was told the loan would be granted upon submission of satisfactory
proof of ownership of the parcel of property as it was being offered
as collateral. It took the lawyer 3 months, but he was able to prove
title to the property dating back to 1803. After sending the
information to the FHA, he received the following reply.
(Actual reply from FHA):
"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application,
we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While
we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented
the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to
the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval
can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its
origin."
And here is the great letter the lawyer responded with:
(Actual response):
"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I
note that you wish to have proof of title extended further than the
206 years already covered in the present application. I was unaware
that any educated person in this country, particularly those working
with real property, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the
United States from France in 1803, the year of origin of title
identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA
bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was
obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from
Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of
Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher
Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to
India by the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella. The good Queen
Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as
the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope
before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus 's expedition. Now the
Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the
Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world.
Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that
part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the
owner of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of
time, the world as we know it, and the FHA. I hope you find God's
original claim to be satisfactory.
Now, may we have our damn reconstruction loan?"
The loan was immediately approved.
Not only is this one of the best e-mails, it is a great history lesson.

Highly Recommended British Indian Restaurants / Re: Suggestions for a Curry in London?
March 21, 2019, 04:31 PMQuote from: Peripatetic Phil on March 21, 2019, 04:20 PM
When I used to live in Chislehurst (very close to Bromley) there was a good Indian restaurant at the North end of the town, but it is too long since I last visited Bromley to know if (a) it is still there, and (b) whether it is still any good. I would be inclined to travel to Croydon (easily accessible from Bromley) and search there; it used to have a large number of Indian restaurants, including at least two Southern Indian (masala dosai, idli, bhel puri and so on).
** Phil.
You Saying "Croydon" reminded me of "The Bangladesh" on the London road South Croydon (just before Dees motors) wish i had a fiver for every meal i had in there in the late 70's its an estate agents now.
